Subject: 2wd to 4wd IP: Logged
Message: Hay yall this is cowboy again. I have heard a lot about doing a solid axel conversion to a 4wd but if I have 2wd how do I mount the transfer case. And what is involved. I have looked at the end of the transmission and I don’t see how you would hook it up. Also if you have a 2wd the body is very close to the frame, do you have clearance to put the t case in. or do I need a body lift first?
Any help on this would be appreciated.
Thanks dave

Message: A body lift will give you more room to work but isn't necessary. THe transfer case bolts up to the back of the tranny. The tranny tail sfaft section should be removable and you could swap in a tailsection off of a 4x4

Message: leafs are super easy but coils flex better. It depends on what you're willing to pay for. If you hang the leafs straight and move the axle perches a little and you are almost done. A coil setup requires a 4 link system and a tracbar. If you have the money go with the coil setup. You can get the Dana 44 off of a Ram, in fact a lot of 1/2 ton rams upgrade to Dana 60's so you may find one for cheap. Get some bracket for the four link fabbed up and hook the links up to the mounts on the ram axle. That's how Jake's truck was done VVV
Most good 4wd shops can handle a 4x4 swap.
And, yes you can leave off the transfer case and front driveshaft till you get those pieces

Message: You'll have to ask them specifically, They shouldn't but they do need to know to provide proper coverage.
If you have the old steering box setup you can use it with a draglink and tie rod. THat's how the rams are anyway

Message: If you can't do it yourself, sell your truck and buy a 4wd. A shop would charge you way too much to make it worthwhile. I wouldn't think you could do it yourself for anything under $1200-1500. Also, you have to remember stuff like: is the front diff the same ratio as the rear, you have to cut up the interior to mount the shifter, if the new axle isn't a Dakota axle it's not going to be a 6X4.5 bolt pattern so two spares or take your chances.
