Subject: Buying used body lift IP: Logged
Message: I have a 97 Dak CC 2WD. I'm probably gonna buy a PA 3" used body lift. Would it be safe to buy it used. What should i look for if there is something wrong with it. I saw the truck that had the lift on it and the truck looked fine with the lift. The guy will put it on for me who i am going to buy it off of. Should i go for it or buy a new body lift.

Message: I agree. You would hate to be kicking yourself in the ass if your truck falls apart over saving about $50. I would buy a new one if I were you, just to be on the safe side.

Message: what could go wrong with buying it used. I can save myself like a 200 dolls cause he will install it for cheap cause he works a a truckin place. Or spend $565.00 for a new one installed. worth it?

Message: So if you could SAVE $200 then that would mean he was going to charge you $365 to install a used lift???
DON'T DO IT!!! Spend $150 and do it yourself, it's not that hard. Almost everyone that has one on here has done it themselves and anybody can answer questions for you too.

Message: You really should buy it and do it yourself. $150 new for the 3" PA lift plus about $65 for the gap gaurds and just install it yourself. Most here did theirs in about 8 hours. It really isn't that hard. Believe me, if I can do it, you can. I've never even changed my spark plugs before and I did it. Plus we're all here to answer any questions you may come across.

Message: I've heard several people on this thread and on others say that body lifts are easy and only take about 8hrs (average). What about Rancho suspension lifts?? I'm looking to get one for my 98 4x4 cc this april and would like to save the money and install it myself. I'm not overly mechanically inclined but I have done few repairs on other trucks. How much difficulty will I have doing that particular lift myself and how much time should I set aside to complet it.
Opinions??

Message: installing a body lift is very easy. i used only hand tools and the jack that came with the truck and had it done in less than 8 hours. now a suspension lift is a whole other beast. you're looking at 18-24 hours and will need more than just a tool box and a jack. if you're pretty mechanically inclined then it probably won't be that hard for you but difficult none the less.

Message: Where can i find some good pictures and instructions on installing a body lift on a dak and what kind of tools will i need. I'm not really mechanically inclined but i think i could probably do it with some help. I don't know much about trucks. Hopefully i can find what i will be getting into if i know what it is like.

Message: Thanks for the heads up ian. As far as tools go, my dad is a retired mopar mechanic. So, in his garage he has a tool cabinet with hundreds of tools ranging from basic sockets to specialty transmission tools. He has a floor jack and 6 jack stands. I'll probably do it at his place so I'll have the tools covered.
As far as being mechanically inclined, I've changed alternators, brakes, various parts in front suspensions on another 4x4 I owned, little things like that but nothing major.
You said that suspension lifts were more difficult. Is that because I'll have to modify existing parts on my truck or because there are more parts to contend with? If there is a lot of modifying, I may be in trouble because I won't have torches or a welder at my disposal. I think those are the only tools my dad doesn't have.
My brother has a friend who has installed trail master lifts to his Ram and a Rancho on another Ram and I'm hoping he'll be generous and give me a hand on my Dakota.
I guess my main concern is fabricating and modifying parts on my truck. If it's just jacking it up, taking old parts off and putting new ones on it might not be too bad. But from what I've been reading on this forum for the last 6-8 months, every lift will need some modifications to the truck. Hopefully they will be minimal.
