I am thinking about going to a solid axle and was wondering if you had to change the rear axle as well when you put the new one in? Any help would be great

You don't have to although depending on what axle you use the lug pattern and possibly gear ratios won't be the same. The front might also be stronger than the rear.

The width on the new axle may be wider than the your rear axle. Our trucks are mid size which means not to much fits. If you get it rebuilt you could have it cut down to size for even more $. Or just slap the matching rear axle from the donar vehicle under your truck so that it will be wider. Wider is better, except in the rain (spray).

What about the speed sensor in the rear diff? What would you use to still have your speedo work?

Ford 9 in. rear and a DANA 44 (or 60) up front. They are almost the same width as the Dakotas.

Oh yea, these are commonly found on early model Broncos. You will have the same choice of gear ratios and the same bolt pattern with these axles.

One more thing , the front end should be a reverse rotation , high pinion axle. It allows the driveshaft to be higher up coming into it and the gears will be pulling instead of pushing.

Just my 2cents. I did alot of investigating for my previous 99 Dak.
