Subject: to all who have 2" coil spacers
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a question for all those who have a 2wd dakota who used the 2" daystar coil spacers on their trucks. Did you guys/gals have the same situation that I had where you actually got 3" of lift out of the supposed 2" coil spacers? If so does anyone know why this happeded? I measured the spacers before they were installed and from the inside of the spring "valley" to the top of the spacer did measure 2", but the front of my truck is 3" higher now. I had to lift the rear to compensate. I e-mailed daystar and every time I ask them, the tech guy just kinda skirted the question and didn't really answer it, he would just tell me to buy the 1-1/2" spacers instead. I am just curious what caused this and if others have experienced it also. Thanks.

I got 3 inches out of my 2inch coil spacers as well. don't know why but the more the better. I had to get rough country add a leaves to compensate.

the only thing I can think of it because they are for a dodge ram there somehow setup to compensate for the rams weight and the dak doesn't have it. but I'm not sure how they would due weight compensation with polyurathain.

conig, do you have pic's with the new tires yet? I have my Daystar 2" in spacers and Fabtech add a leafs. I got a price of 340.00 to install the spacers, what did you pay? I will probably end up doing it myself.

njquad2by: $340!!! dude do it yourself! it took me about 1 1/2 hrshrs. the first one took about 1hr but after i figured it out the second did not take long at all. rent yourself a coil spring compressor from a parts store like Advanced Auto, a socket to fit the nut on the compressor and a good pull handle. all of the instructions are included and it is very simple. the trick is to compress the coil as far as you can while it is still on the truck, once you get it compressed good it is just a matter of putting the spacer on and re-assembling the parts.if you have any questions post back here and i will do my best. i did get more that 2in but not quite 3. i have to install add-a-leafs.

An hour and a half sounds good. They were talking 4 hours at 85 bucks an hour. I have to get the spring compressor and a ball joint tool. I hope to get them installed this weekend.
Thanks

My question for the people with 2 inch spacers is, does the upper a-arm touch the stop after you put the spacer on? If it does, your screwed. Can't align it that way.

Wouldn't want any other!

On my truck my upper a-arm is about 1/2" below the upper bump stop, when I got my truck aligned I was told I was on the very limit of alignment, meaning any more lift and I'm screwed. It also makes for a noisy ride, whenever the suspension flexes down or I hit a pothole i get a loud thud when the upper bump stop hits.

I have no problems with my alignment, my camber is off. I only paid 196.00 to get mine installed, didn't want to try it myself.

I have yet to get around to takeing pics because I wanted to take them during the day. I get off at 3:00pm today so If it doesn't rain I'll get some up.

I'm surprised it doesn't actually hit. But I take it your talking about the stock a-arm. I have a Fabtech 3" lift and I dont think I'd do it with that lift.

Wouldn't want any other!

I haven't done any suspension lift to my truck yet. Just a body lift. I just measured the stock gap between my upper bump stop and A-arm. It's 3/4 of an inch tops.

A customer e-mailed me the other day with a question and included this thread in his e-mail.

To answer your question why a 2" spacer is providing more than 2" inches of lift requires some simple math. Unless you want to get down to the EXACT effect a spring spacer has on the total lift (requires a few measurements) the easiest way to explain this is with an experiment everyone at home can try.

Find a door, a wall, or any other surface that you can use as a reference. Standing straight and tall take your arm and hold it straight out from your body - it should be as level as possible. Now imagine your arm is the control arm on your truck. Your shoulder is where the control arm attaches to the frame and your hand is the tire. Keeping your arm straight out (no bending at the elbow!) lower it so that your elbow has dropped 3" inches beyond level. Notice how much further your hand moved in relation to your elbow? The same happens on your truck. The spring is mounted inboard of the tire/wheel. When you increase the lift height at the spring, the net effect is GREATER out at the wheel end. This is why a 2" spacer provides more than 2" inches of lift. PerformanceLifts.com sells a 1.5" spacer to provide approximately 2" inches of lift at the wheels. It's painfully simple once you stop and think about it.

If anyone has Dakota lift questions please let me know.

Thanks,

it depends you really don't need them but if you want downward travel I'd get em. I'm looking for a set to use with the fabtech 2 inch coils to try and get a little higher.

when you take it to a shop to get the camber and alignment set make sure they tighten down the upper control arm mounts all the way, mine vibrated loose and the arm came all the way down to were it was hitting the frame when I turned my wheel at a standstill my passenger side arm was moveing front to back instead of up and down.

Shameless plug but it will save you guys (and gals) money... http://performancelifts.com/cgi-bin/cart/PLCDD15U.html

The Daystar spacers we sell are identical but they are black instead of red. Saves about $15.00 and they always ship within 24 hours... something JC Whitney can't always do.
