It's simple. Go to the dealer, buy a front/bearing hub unit for about $175 and replace. I really checked into this. I tried to go the cheap route and press out the bearing and just replace. Not, and mean not going to happen. Where I live there's a really good bearing company. Got the part # of the bearing, it was a TIMCO, then tried to get another one. Chrysler has all the rights to this bearing. We tried to cross reference. Some were close, but not quite the right size. Also this bearing is heat/freeze bearing. It doesn't come out too easy. Meaning it's a close torrerance bearing. On these trucks you need to keep a close eye out for the rotor. About every year and a half I replace the pads and either machine the rotor down or buy another one. When the rotor gets offset it will, over time, tear down the hub bearing. Well that's my two cents on what I've discovered. Greg

I did the front inside and outside bearings on the 96 S10 I used to have. I'm sure it's not much different than our Dakota's. I couldn't tell you the exact step by step, but its not hard and I didn't need any special tools. Take the wheel off. Then there's a cap that pops off by grabbing it with a pair of channel locks. Under there is a big ass nut with a cotter pin through it. Pull out the pin and unscrew the nut. There are seals that you pop out and out comes the bearings. I think the inner bearings are behind the rotor which comes out pretty easy. It took me 20-25 minutes a side. Be sure to have a roll of paper towels on hand because the wheel bearing grease is messy as hell. Get a Haines manual for the specifics. Another thing I found was that the price of the bearings can vary alot from place to place.

Here's for a 4x4 Gen III Dak:

Get hub/bearing assembly from Bumper to Bumper (cheapest I found when I did it. ~$140 for non ABS)

Remove wheel.
Remove sway bar end caps (if equipped) and rotate bar out of the way.
Remove the half-shaft. (Hub nut could be stubborn)
Remove brake caliper and rotor.
Remove three bolts holding in the hub assembly.
Bolt in new assembly and reassemble.

Goes pretty quickly with no special tools, just a socket set and 7mm allen wrench. Don't remember the size, but the hub nut takes a pretty healthy sized socket.

Just remember - never mix different compounds of grease. If you don't remember or know what was in there before clean it all out with a parts washer or brake cleaner and use new grease. Lucas makes some great stuff. These bearings have a hard life.

Hey Christopher, I heard the same thing from a couple of teenagers who owned S-10's. Yes, there is a big difference between the two. I totally understand what your saying, but it isn't going to happen on a Gen 3 Dak. And there is no cotter pin for this. It has a big nut that's just torqued to 155 foot lbs. Also the Hub assembly for this truck doesn't need any grease. It's a two piece bearing and sealed. Greg

I have a 4x2 also. The hub part # is the same as a 4x4. Only thing I really don't understand is UWGriz said there's three bolts that hold on the hub. Maybe that is on a 4x4 but not a 4x2. As far as buying the hub, only place I've seen this item is the dealer. If anyone does find it other than the dealer, it would be great if they could drop the info here for all to see. Greg

Yeah, I was talking 4x4 - didn't know what you had. 4x2 would have to be different as the half shaft holds the assembly together on the 4x4.

On both 4x4's and 4x2's, the nut is a 35mm. Use a deep well socket. That's about the only special tool except what you need for the brakes. I Heli-coiled evenually all four caliper mounts. The Dodge dealer mechanic here was telling me that's the biggest problem they have with all the Dodge trucks. Greg

I've done two of the four so far as well as a lower control arm for the sway bar end cap. On the bright side, many of the other fasteners had seized as a defense against stripping...

I know, sounds a little wierd but it works. The threads for the mounting points of the calipers easily get either over torqued or undertorqued. Either way if this happens, you'll have screwed up threads and a warped rotor, and if done often, a bad hub bearing. This comes from a Dodge Mechanic. It's one of the most often fixes they do. But they generally replace the whole spindle. Much cheaper to heli-coil the threads. Just a thought when doing this your self. Plus the torque for the 4x2 caliper mount is 28 ft/lbs. That's not a lot, so they do get over torqued often. Greg

Yes, they get over torqued quite often, but the spindle material is far softer than what it should be. Nothing should ever strip as easily as these things do.

4x2 is even easier.

Remove wheel/tire
Remove brake caliper
Remove brake rotor
Remove hub/spindle nut
Slide off hub assembly
Slide on new assembly
Torque hub/spindle nut to 185 ft-lbs
Replace rotor, caliper and wheel/tire

Good luck and have fun. And be careful to not strip the caliper bolts.

Do you have front ABS? I'm guessing not if Dodge is *only* charging $156. Just something to double check. I found my 4x4 hubs at Bumper to Bumper for less than dealer, but for some reason, they don't have 4x2. I checked a couple of my usual sources who are usually able to find me just about anything that isn't dealer only and none of them could find anything.

Not that it really matters, but I have a copy of the 1998 labor operation time schedules and it lists 0.5 hours to replace the bearings per side. I don't know, maybe that gives you some insight as to what you might be in for or if you have someone else do it, they shouldn't be able to screw you on labor charges if you know how long Chrysler allots to its dealers.

They asked if i had Rear ABS or ALL wheel ABS. I haven't been able to come up with an answer to that. I gave em my vin number of my truck and told them to find out themselves. But one thing i don't understand is that the rear doesn't even brake. I mean..when i slide on ice, the front are always locked but the rear just rolls. It's like there is no brakes in the rear. How could i even have ABS on the rear then? I'm lost on that one.

I have the same problem but mine has rear ABS. Just seems like the front brakes are always doing the stopping and the rear do nothing. I have 81000 miles on mine and I still haven't had to change them out. I had Midas look at them and they were a little blown that the rear brakes still look good. They adjusted them but they said it doesn't really matter since the rear's are self adjusting anyway. I'm stumped. Greg

The self-adjusters on these trucks suck. But even at that, to properly use the self adjusters, you're supposed to do a series of 8-10 reverse stops (reverse-stop-reverse-stop, etc). Sounds weird, but that's the recommended procedure.

I think rear brakes are commonly "Drum brakes". They are inherently ABS because they don't grab very well. They are cheap so that is why they are put on the back. Front brakes are usually "Disc Brakes" with take additional components to make them ABS. Therefore, most people have RWD ABS. Some people bought the extra AW ABS.
