Message: Zen has the right idea but that is not 100% acurate.
to truley test you need to gurantee that one wheel would be normally spinning faster than the other. for example turn a corner and light them up. We have a bare dirt lot behind my work that we test lockers and LSD in as we upgrade our trucks. it now looks like a dirt oval track with figure 8's from us roosting.
After my LSD install I can feel the difference just in a normal corner. If I punch it, it feels more like my truck is turninig on a rail than before. before the outside tire would have just spun, now both are forced to povide power.
I hope this explanation makes sence. good luck.

Message: You can still get twin stripes from an open diff on dirt. Jack up the rear of your truck in neutral, and rotate one tire by hand. If the other tire spins the same way its LSD; if opposite way, its an open rear.

Message: Jaggy' are you confused? You said your outside tire would spin, do you mean inside? Your truck must be slow, cause if I punch mine in a corner, I get a load of tire smoke, and some counter steering, not just a good cornering truck! Kowalski has the right answer. Sometimes an open diff. will spin both tires all day long, until you need it to, then it sucks ass, and smokes one tire to your embarrassment!

Message: ski,
I don't think an open rear end will spin both tires in the dirt.
And,
The lsd, actually is worse on a slick wet, or icy corner. With the open, three of the tires track, and one will begin to spin. the non spinning one will help it track thru the corner.
Now, in a corner, you get both rear wheels breaking loose, and you look at the car that was behind you thru your front windshield!
Don't believe me, ask others with lsd, or try it yourself.
Now, LSD, DOES give you a better potential traction in a straight line, or stuck situations, cause you have power to two wheels.
You know CW once said that the other wheel only gets about 10% power. And I thought huh? Then why do I leave two thick black burnouts on dry concrete? That's with a 5 spd, and the wider tires on the stock 16x8 wheels.

Message: TexasTodd is right..... The same holds true for 4wd on ice. People think because they have 4wd that they rule the roads in icy weather. Ignorance is blessed......
4wd on ice is really bad if you have LSD out back. Then you have 3 tires spinnig. If one tire ever spins you will have 3 spinning and a 4wd w/LSD. MY AWD Turbo Talon 5spd had LSD in the rear. You could not drive that car in inclement wheather. It would do a 360 so fast it would make you dizzy.

Message: Todd - I KNOW an open rear can spin both tires in the dirt; that's what I have. In low traction/high power situations it lights up both every time. Some fool will probably now say I have LSD, but I guarantee you I don't.

Message: Now todd are you saying you cant drive? i have lsd and drive my 2wd through western ny winters. If I goose my truck in the snow, I counter steer. Its not tough! you turn the wheel the way the ass end goes! On dry pavement in 1st or 2nd, I goose it it goes sideways! big deal its been happening since they started making these rearends when my grandpa was a kid. On dirt a non-lsd will almost always spin two tires!!! put one tire on dry pavement, and one on wet grass, and you have a different story!

Message: ummm again,
Thanks, but I don't need a lesson on driving, on any surface, thanks. AND, I have a 4.7, 5spd manual, with LSD rear, 2wd, AND I ORDERED it THAT WAY! I wouldn't want anything else. But, what I said about the LSD, breaking loose both rears, instead of one in corners, does hold true-Thanks Whiplash! And no, it's never been a problem for me. I do know how to drive-well in fact.
ski,
I'm no authority on the open rears, I'm sure what your saying must be true. Does it ever spin both on a hard surface?

Reg cab at that. I like the lsd in all weather! a one wheel peeler sucks in the snow, especially with a v8. they just wont go!!! I like the double traction. I like sideways! I like passing stupid slow people, and putting it sideways beside them! Maybe you are a great driver, maybe I am too, but personaly I'd rather have lsd and 99% of people will agree with me!

Message: I've got the LSD with the AWD and the crooked road handling is unreal. You can take it into the curve and punch it out on any surface without a slide, just steer it through. The extra traction for towing in this combination really lets you pull up hill on slick surfaces too.
