My 1991 v6 3.9l won't go into gear. I assume that I need to replace the clutch. I can't afford to take it to someone to fix, so I am going to try and do it myself. This will be the first time I will attempt to do a clutch. What kind of tools will I need? Is a new clutch set all the parts that I will need? Where is the best place to place the jack stands? I have the repair guide from the Autozone website, but it is vague. And yes i have searched the forum.

Zane,

I've done this a few times myself. Once on a V6 GenII and twice on my 98 5.2L. You'll need a set of metric and standard sockets (at least on my truck, the majority of the bolts around the tranny are metric, while some of them around the engine are standard). A long extention (12" extention for my 3/8" ratchet worked well for me), and a universal joint will help you get at some of the more difficult bolts.

Once you get it apart, before installing the new clutch, have the flywheel resurfaced. A good machine shop should be able to do that for you at a reasonable price. Also, as long as you're in there, it's also a good idea to replace the pilot bearing. A new pilot bearing shouldn't cost you more than $10. Also, good to get a new Throw-Out bearing, which may not be included with your new clutch kit.

To clean everything out, I used brake parts cleaner (about $1 a can). It disolves grease, dirt, and dust, and won't effect the friction parts after it evaporates/dries.

When putting everyting back together, have some high-temp grease on hand to lube the shaft that the T.O. bearing slides on, the input shat end that goes into the pilot bearing, and the clutch release mechanism.

Assembly is exactly the reverse of disassembly. Just make sure to take note of all the vent lines, electrical connections, etc... that you unplug during disassembly, and put everything back together just like you found it, and you should be O.K. I'm pretty you have the hydraulic clutch like I've got. You shouldn't have to do any adjusting with the clutch release mechanism (guys more familiar with the '91 year, correct me if I'm wrong).

If you can spend a few more bucks, I recommend getting the Haynes manual for your truck. I know it helped me a lot. There's sone good pictures in there for clutch work and pretty much anything else you'd want to fix, and they work through step-by-step. Should be considerably more specific than the repair guide you're talking about.

I hope this helps!
