Subject: Howling noise IP: Logged
Message: I have a 99 reg cab r/t with 57,000 miles. since about 45,00 miles, it has been making a howling noise when I am driving it down the road. I thought it was just the tires doing it and I got new ones put on today and the noise is still there. I has someone tell me it might be a bearing that is making this noise but I'm notsure. It only makes the noise when the truck is moving. I'm not sure if it is in the rear end or if the transmission is making this noise. I was wondering if anyone has heard of this problem or might have any idea of what it is or might be.

Message: Hey Cory, was the problem with the pinion bearings or the axle bearings? I'm going to put her up in the air tomorrow at work and look at the rear end. I think that might be the problem, I just hope it's not expensive whatever it is. If the problem is not in the rearend I'll take a look at those front bearings, I didn't even think about that. Thanks for the info guys. I'll keep you guys posted.

Message: Hey guys, I put her up in the air today and we isolated the problem as being the front pinion bearing. Just left her in drive and used a stethascope to listen to the bearings. The actual noise that the bearing makes is not that loud but it is echoed through the driveshaft and the sound is amplified alot. When you are standing under the truck you'd swear there was something inside the driveshaft making the noise itself. Talk about hamonic vibration. Anyways, I went to an Autozone and you can get all the bearings except the FRONT PINION BEARING! What the f**k is that s**t. The only one I need is not available. I'm going to try and track one down and I'll keep you guys posted on my results. If anyone knows a part number or something that would be great. Just letting everone know and thanks for all the help and once again, I'll keep you guys posted.

Message: Was at Carquest today and inquired about a pinoin seal for the 9.25" rearend in my 00 Dak. The guy said it was a special order, the LV warehouse didn't even stock it.
Better be sitting down for this, it lists for $35! Yeah the pinion seal. Guess it must be gold plated or something like that. Better check to make sure you can get the pinion seal before digging into the diff.

Message: AH HA, the front pinion bearing, torn to pieces. The noise was horrible, but I have defeated my biggest problem I ever had with this truck. U can get all the bearings that you need right at the dealer for a decent price if you can get someone with an account. Total price came to about $220, without axle bearings. Not too bad. I get to put her all back together tomorrow and back on the road. Hope I helped out anyone with the same problem. If anyone needs part numbers, just let me know and I will give you all the mopar part numbers for the rebuild.

Message: most bearing manufactures can replace any bearing you need WITHOUT A PART NUMBER, all they need is the inside diameter of the bearing seat, the outside diameter of the shaft, thickness of the bearing, type of bearing (ball, roller, needle, tapered, roller etc.) and seal type, (neoprene, steel, unsealed etc. and most likely they already have a bearing available that will do the job. Look in the Yellow pages under "BEARINGS" for a distributer that can help you with this.
