Message: I have a 01 dakota sport with the 4.7ltr engine. I do a lot of commuting to and from work (highway) which is killer on the wallet.Anyways i was looking into the flowmaster exhaust system because it claims 2-5% increase in mpg and increased hp (always good). I was just curious if anybody has this exhaust, if they like it, and if they noiced any gains.I have a custom exhaust set-up on my other vehicle, but thats soley or performance. Thanks

Message: i had heard the same thing about the increase in gas mileage. After mine was installed i saw an increase of 1-2 mpg. But it was short lived. It only lasted about a month. Why, well i don't know, after the first month it droped back to normal. but the sound is killer so get the exhaust anyway.

Message: About how loud is the 40 series?
I want to keep it quiet at cruising speeds and idle. I don't want to be driving down the road, having to yell back to my daughter just so she can hear me...
I've never been a fan of loud exhaust systems. When my civic was N/A i had a local muffler shop put an exhaust sytem together for me, at first they removed the resinator (because thats what all the ricers wanted that went there) i made it two blocks before i turned around and had them install the resinator. Even then it was louder then i wanted, getting on the freeway, and the higher rpms was bothersome, but that all changed when i went F/I...
I'm hopeing to keep it close to factory sound at idle and cruising. But with everything, somethings got to give when you change stuff. Thanks for the replys

Message: I got the 70 series Flowmaster for my 2000 Durango 5.9. I have noticed that it is very quite during cruising. No resonance what so ever. I did notice that it is much louder on the outside. I don't think my wife would stand the sound of the 40 series. She doesn't like loud cars. Heck, She hates my 96 Camaro SS with the SLP cat back system.
If, i was single, i would get the 40 series. If, you have kids and a nagging wife, stick with the 70 series. It's really up to you, if you want to go down the road listing to your wife bitch about how loud your truck is, get the 40 series.
Standing at Discount Tires watching them pull my Durango in was music to my ears. Deep mellow sound.
I did notice 2-3 mpg improvement. However, i also did my MSD ignition at the same time.
oh, forgot to mention that going down the highway, is slightly louder than my stock exhaust.

Message: I bought a used R/T that had a Flowmaster on it. My wife HATED it! I thought it sounded great, but it did tend to get a little loud. At certain speeds, we could barely hear each other. I hated to do it, but I went back to stock, It still has a nice rumble to it, but not nearly as loud. If you like quiet and want to hear the radio or CD's, you better stick to stock.

Did you just replace the muffler or did you get the whole cat back system? I'm not trying to add much performance to this truck (have k&n drop in and thinking about the exhaust) Thats what i have my car for. To me loud(er then stock)exhaust should have performance to back up the sound, otherwise IMO your just soe idiot trying to people's attention...So i'm not wanting something that will draw any attention...The 70 series is quieter then the 40 series? Sorry that i don't know much about the flowmaster mufflers, i'm new to them, and would rather learn from people who actually have the product, then from what it "should" do or sound like...thanks again

Message: Jesse,
With all the ignition and exhaust, i did feel a difference in power. But, i was more in it for the mpg increase.
When Overthehill mentioned that they couldn't hear the CD or each other talk. They probably had the 40 series muffler.
Like, i said, mine is just a tad bit louder than stock while cruising on the highway 70-85mph. It's louder than stock during acceleration. But, i like it that way.
The 40 series is a 2 chamber design, while the 70 series is a 3 chamber design. Again, i have the 5.9 and chose the 3 chamber. There are much louder trucks out there, but, i preferr to listen to my stereo during highway cruising.
No, i just replaced the muffler. Since i already have 2-1/2" pipes, i did not go with the aftermarket 3" pipes. I don't race my durango, so didn't need the 3" for higher flow at higher RPM's. You can just get the 70 series and take it to a muffler shop, it's a real easy install for them. I did it on my lunch hour. lol
I think you will be happy with the 70 series, i surely am. Another big plus, the wife hasn't complained one bit. Heck, you don't know how happy i am with that.

Message: I've got 40 series on my 4.7L. I had the stock muffler removed and went duals from there back. It definately is a little loud. I can hear the radio just fine, but the neighbors commented, as did my girlfreind, when I had it done. No real complaints, just comments that it's loud. Heads definately turn when you start it up at the gas station or parking lot. Nice deep aggressive sound. I chose this muffler because I do race my Dak and have done enough to the rest of the motor to have the performance to back it up.
This mod made no difference to my 1/4 mile times and I noticed no increase in gas milage. I did an airraid cold air filter kit and the pipes at the same time. Everything else came later.

Message: Look at the Kenne Bell website. With the catback completely removed it only adds 2 HP. A muffler change will only make it sound diffrent.

Message: fastyz400..
What you described is exactly what i'm looking for. pretty much stock idle sound, but more agressive tone under acceleration.I'm looking for the gain in mpg over hp. I am not ever going to race my truck, thats what my car is for (truck will be pulling it)
Sounds like it will be a 70 series for me. Thanks to all that contributed.

Message: The gains muffler manufacturers claim are "theoretical" gains. Your actual results may vary. I didn't notice any mpg gain when I installed my 40 series, but it does make it sound a whole lot cooler. If you want real gains, get a high flow cat also. This becomes the bottleneck when the muffler is changed. I got a Delta 40 which is quieter than a regular 40. It's got a little resonance in the cab, but it's not annoying. When you stomp on though, it roars. The higher the number, the quieter the muffler. If you have sound on your computer, you can go to the following link and listen to the difference: http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/cgi-bin/flowmaster?mv_nextpage=sound.html

Message: Hey thanks a lot timberwolf, it's bad enough that i just took my car for a spin (way to much fun) now that you showed me that site, it's got me ready for the track. That camaro w/the 50 series (chirp from the tires) got my blood rushing, it gave me chills....then of course the pt cruiser made me laugh....
Anyways, thanks for that link, it looks like it will definatly be the 70 series for me...

Message: the 40 series on mine is not overpowering. my buddy has a chevy with a 305 and has the same exhaust and his sounds really load in side the truck. I think the dodge is better at cutting down the outside noise. But my girlfriend hates the exhaust but its not her truck so who gives a crap what she thinks.

Message: minimac400,
Just wait till you get a wife. If you go on a long trip, can you imagine the complaining from her.
I would have got the 40 series, if i was single too.
But, went with the 70 series to keep my wife from complaining.
