Subject: What will a clogged cat do? IP: Logged
Message: Hey everybody,
My buddy has a Gen 3 Dak that feels VERY sluggish in the higher RPMs. If you are lightfooted on the throttle you can get to the high speeds, but you are screwed if you need to get moving quickly. He says the truck seems to be slowing down more quickly (like in a diesel) when he gets off the gas.
Could this be a clogged cat? There isnt any bad egg smell that people have warned of, and there is a rattling noise, but that could be his transmission (long story). We were thinking fuel filter, but that is a pain to get to being in the tank, so we are putting off taking that out.
Thanks for any help,
MikesDak

Message: A rotten egg smell will ussually be in resultant of the cat burning or being overheated... Ussually from staying on the throttle or towing and lugging a lot... A rattling noise is a very good indication of going bad or clogged cat... Also you will have extreme loss in power, and quicker deceleration as you indicated... The only really thing he can do is replace it, because if you gut it, you'll run rich and ruin your o2 sensors :// The best way to tell if it's the cat or not is to get underneath and tap or peck at the cat and if it rattles, it may be clogged/bad... You'll probably be better to go with something like a carsound cat instead of the $200 direct replacement cat or the $100 unniversal cat... "I think it's around $100 for the better carsound cat and should last a little longer"

Message: If your replacing the cat, check the O2 sensor(s) and plugs. Raw gas in the exhaust can burn up the cat. Had this on a Ford Ranger years ago. Engine was running like crap, distributor module out with 3 plugs firing, and I limped it home 60 miles. Cat was glowing and burned up when I got home, all the unburned raw gas and air burned up in the CAT. Took it off and it was pretty messed up inside

Message: That sounds like what it's doing. Can't squeal the tires at all, no power, in the top end at all, but slow and steady gets you up and going.
We'll crawl under there later this week and check it out. His #1 O2 sensor did go bad a couple weeks ago, I'll ask him about the back one.
Thanks everyone

Message: If you know that your cat is clogged. Then take it to the dealer. Federal emissions standards demand that a dealership warranty all Cats for 8 Years. This means you will get a free replacement. However they will test it first to make sure it is indeed bad, if it isn't it's going to cost you $40 to $60 in service charges.

Message: If his o2 went bad a while back, it could have caused him to run rich, which would cause the cat to heat up to the point that the welds that hold the honeycomb will break, causing it to restrict exhaust flow..I went through 3 cats because my car was runing to rich at idle, and it doesn't take to long to ruin a cat by runing to rich or too lean.
