For the most part, consumers use brand names they trust.
Are you looking for a PAPER filter?
For most applications, I would have no problem putting a WIX (or a Baldwin or Hastings filter) on any engine that I own. All are good filters.
Many guys use NAPA GOLD. My suggestion is to stay away from NAPA Filters --- too restrictive regarding air flow.
FRAM --- Don't trust them at all!

Amsoil does not offer a paper air filter. We offer Amsoil TS (Two-Stage) Air Filter with Oil-Wetted Foam --- NOT to be confused with the NEW Amsoil FlowzAir currently coming to market.
Foam is thicker (than paper) and allows for more area for the dirt to get caught --- still allowing for good airflow.are "full-depth" filters that trap and hold much more dirt than do conventional "surface-type" filters. The polyurethane foam used in AMSOIL Air Filters is much thicker than the thin layer of paper used in conventional filters. The foam’s thickness allows for more filtering area and more capacity to trap dirt over a longer period of time.
Amsoil TS oil-wetted foam air filters keep oils and engines cleaner for longer periods with the most effective air filtration available today.
AMSOIL air filters provide superior performance in all three critical areas of filtration:
efficiency (dirt-stopping)
capacity (dirt-holding)
resistance (air flow)
AMSOIL air filters are uniquely designed to hold wear-causing dirt while allowing clean air into the engine for better performance, better fuel economy, lower exhaust emissions and longer engine life.
Also, AMSOIL air filters are washable and reusable for thousands of miles of trouble-free service.
The Amsoil TS Air Filter for passenger vehicles, features two layers of oil-wetted polyurethane foam, which provides a network of interlocking cells that trap particles yet allow a constant flow of clean intake air for outstanding engine protection and performance.

The oil filter study you always mention from BITOG was an amateur performance and loaded with disclaimers. Even the experts on BITOG site say that it is bogus. Have you read their comments?
I am not defending anyone or bashing anyone. I do believe that with Amsoil's newly introduced replacement air filters --- Amsoil FlowzAir --- that Amsoil will be offering one of the finest line of air filters in the marketplace.
Also, if you look at my prior thread I was recommending WIX, Baldwin or Hastings for paper filters.

samtheman,
Here was the websites disclaimer on BITOG (which I frequent and am a regular contributor):
Of course these are not standard ASTM tests and by no means represent any scientific certainty. He explains on how he performed his test and what he found as a result. This information is to be taken as nothing more and is not to endorse , promote, or imply which is better but to share some interesting results.
--------------------------------------------------
Part of the disclaimer written by the gentleman performing the tests:
... This is not a laboratory test, but a real world test. What can be controlled is controlled and what cannot be controlled is left to nature. If you insist that I perform laboratory testing, or simultaneous testing of all filters on identical vehicles, then please provide funding to back up your claim. I do not have that sort of funding, nor will I ever.
--------------------------------------------------
Consumers must be aware of the testing methods used --- whether they are scientific and meet generally accepted testing methods --- or "shade tree mechanic".
This person (the "tester") used different vehicles --- tested under different conditions --- used different lighting in the photos --- etc.
--------------------------------------------------
Though this test was interesting --- I do not feel consumers should draw any conclusions.

Agree with you samtheman,
The Amsoil Air Filter Graph currently used only uses a rating system of "poor to excellent" comparing - Amsoil - High Quality Paper - Low Quality Paper - and oil-wetted K&N Gauze, ... which offer no comparative results or analysis to competitors products that are available.
--------------------------------------------------
Please keep your ears and eyes open for information and comparable results regarding our new line of air filters which are called Amsoil FlowzAir. We are excited about the new filter line --- and so far some the guys on BITOG have favorable comments.

Message: Steven -
You stated that the new Flowzair filters are not the same as the 2-Stage filters, product code TS - I did a search and found websites (AMSOIL dealers) that state they are one and the same as of summer 03. Is the Flowzair now the only air filter AMSOIL sells? I also checked the corporate website and found no mention whatsoever of the Flowzair - only the 2 Stage, once again, with product code TS. What gives(other than my sanity, perhaps)?

Now, the rest of the story:
The Amsoil FlowzAir is the replacement line for ALL of the Amsoil air filter line --- and unfortunately Amsoil has decided to use the same product codes. A consumer currently orders the old design and is suprised when they receive the new design --- for some makes and models.
I am assuming Amsoil will continue with this until the warehouses inventories (of the old 2-stage filterrs) is nearly depleted, before they make a 100% switch.
The FlowzAir Filters are not being promoted or advertised on the website - however they were in an Amsoil catalog at the end of 2003 - because they are not available across the board. Amsoil Flowzair filters will eventually be the only filters offered by Amsoil.

Here is a quote from a satisfied Amsoil FlowzAir Customer:
"I had two of the older versions, one in my 2001 GMC was a real tight fit to get in. Your hands got dirty and its was messy to install. I put in the new TS123 last week and it just dropped in. The fit was perfect. The blue EVA seal takes the place of the form fit seal. It makes installing them a snap. The other went into my 2002 Trans Am and was the same, perfect fit an easy to install. They also come packaged in a better plastic bag so no oil can possible leak out prior to opening."
--------------------------------------------------
I will keep looking for testimonials and or test results and post them here when possible.

AMSOIL High Tack Foam Filter Oil
... NOW Available in a NEW and Convenient Aerosol Spray
AMSOIL Foam Filter Oil has long provided users of AMSOIL air filters with a high level of air flow and superior particle removal. Now, five years of research, testing and development have yielded a NEW AND IMPROVED Foam Filter Oil formulation.
_____ _____
New AMSOIL High Tack Foam Filter Oil (Product Code: AFO)
A special blend of synthetic polymers that allows maximum air flow and increased particle removing efficiency and capacity.
High Tack Foam Filter Oil
-- stays in place throughout service life
-- resists washout from carburetor fogging
-- will NOT plug foam filter cells
-- new red color helps ensure even oil coverage across the entire filter.
AMSOIL High Tack Foam Filter Oil was tested with AMSOIL 2-Stage Foam Filter media under the SAE J726 test methodology, yielding an efficiency rating of 99.5 percent.
High particle removing efficiency is critical in preventing engine wear, keeping equipment running at peak efficiency and improving fuel efficiency.
AMSOIL High Tack Foam Filter Oil is available in its traditional form and a NEW and convenient aerosol spray. Because it offers users quick and convenient application, the new spray formulation is a boon for power sports enthusiasts.
Applying High Tack Foam Filter Oil
For best performance, apply a generous amount of High Tack Foam Filter Oil and work it into the foam media. Squeeze out excess oil, leaving a uniformly oiled filter.
A properly oiled filter will feel oily or tacky to the touch on both the outer and inner surfaces, but should not be dripping oil.
When reinstalling the air filter, apply a thin film of AMSOIL Multi-Purpose Grease on the foam base to insure a leak free seal between the filter and housing.

Message: All:
I've been thinking of doing a couple of performance improvements to my '02 w/3.9L - nothing major, just a little boost in hp and mileage. I ordered a set of Bosch injectors from fiveomotorsports. My next trick was a FIPK from K&N or some others I've seen on this forum until I saw some threads on another forum that talked about GM not honoring warranties on engines with these types of cold air filter systems. Supposedly, their reasoning was that the oil used to coat the filter could be sucked onto the MAF?? and cause all kinds of mixture problems. It would seem logical that if the oil coating is excessive then their reasoning could be legit. Has anyone got any knowledge of this situation and/or do you know if Daimler-Chrysler takes the same position? Thanks in advance.

Sounds to me like GM is using scare tactics to keep their

customers.

Message: Thanks Dr. D. I kind of figured it was one of those situations where if you just read the instructions there won't be a problem. Just wondered if anyone out there had gotten any grief from their dealer. And looking through the archives, there sure are a lot of FIPK out there.
And Mopar V8 guy, you're right, no MAF, I was just relating what the GM dealer referenced, thinking the same might apply to something similar in the Dak motor. Thanks.
