Subject: P1281 WITH 180degree thermastat. IP: Logged
Message: I have a 180 degree thermostat on my truck. I put it in about a year ago. every winter (here in north florida) never gets colder then 26degrees. I always throw check engine lights about five times a winter.
this is engine to cold to long. I didn't notice a diference when I switched to the 180degree thermostat should I switch back to the 195.
does anyone think it is staying open?
any northerners have this problem?

Message: Thank you for posting this thread! I've gotten hammered from all directions becaause I'm the only person on this forum arguing against the 180 stat. If you are having problems in Florida then I can only imagine how many people north of you are having problems with this. Although, you may have a defective thermostat. I say this because 1000 people on this forum can't be wrong. The 180 stat is working fine for all of them!

Message: I had a 180 and kept throwing the code light every 3rd drive cycle and kept resetting it. I finally got tired of it and put the 195 back in and have the kenne bell charger on my 2002 4.7 and although the fan runs constantly with the computer upgrade, I have had no further problems with the damn light coming on. By the way, Im in California. Also not a very cold state.

Message: My 2002 4.7L is too new to get the PCM "flashed".
I'm assuming that Leech can reprogram the PCM to run with the 180 stat. That is a big hassle for something that may or may not help you any in the HP department and it will definately hurt your gas mileage.
There is a way to fix this problem without a "flash". With the 195 stat installed, go drive your truck normally. Take an ohmeter and check the resistance across the thermoresistor. Now, install the 180 stat and drive the truck for a few minutes and check the resistance across the thermoresistor. The difference between the two is how big of a resistor you need to install in line. Just remember that your temp guage will be about 15 degrees off. When it says 195 you will actually be 180. The computer will think it is at 195 and you will quit throwing codes.

Message: Conig;
Glad to see you back on the board!
Sorry to hear about your problem though. I've had the Robert Shaw 180 in my truck since last year and no problem to date, knock on wood. As you know I'm over here in P'cola.
If I had to guess at it, I would say it is probably stuck open.
Hope that helps you man...

Did your problem go away when you put the 195stat back in? I'm having the same problem with the 180stat.

Message: I went to the dealer to get a 180stat and they told me that would void the warranty due to sludge formation. Anyone else heard of this? Is my dealer full of crap? They said it was OK to make modifications to the engine as long as the modifications don't cause damage. They said the 180's don't work in the 4.7L. Any thoughts?

Message: 2003SLT4.7L,they are told in the classroom it won`t work. Obviously it works, for most who use it anyway. As for the sludge my opinion is that it would take a lot colder stat to sludge it up. My oil analysis results are excellent with 21k on 180 stat. If my motor was sludging up I would expect accelerated wear. When they say it will sludge it up and void the warranty it implies, to me, it would happen before the 70k warranty is up. I just don`t buy it.
It is actually good if they think it won`t work. They won`t check for it because it will throw a code;)
I have looked at a lot of threads on 180 t-stats here and on other boards. The worst result I have seen is some guy, with a Chevy I think, who had more carbon build up on his valves. If your running colder I could see this happening. I may play it safe and start running the stock 195 in the winter.
Those are my thoughts.
03 qc 4.7 auto 4x4 26k 180 t-stat since 5k, very cold this year in N.E., no codes.

Works fine for me, AND without any belt clutch/fan, and no other resisters, etc. Just no clutch/fan, and 180 tstat.
OH yea, did I mention the heater bypass? It's open now to get some heat in the cab. I still use the a/c about every afternoon even in the winter though!

Message: I'm kinda goin backwards here. I think this thing runs too hot. In 20 degree weather I have to turn the temp knob on the AC all the way over to the blue part. I swear that this thing would melt the vents off if you left it on high heat. My wife has a habbit of leaving this thing at idle for 30 minutes at a time with the heater wide open (early morning warmup). You can't even stand to touch the stearing wheel on this thing after she leaves it running for 30 min..

YES, I could dig up MANY old posts, where others are doing the same thing. That's where I got the idea.
NO hp robbing, tq robbing belt driven clutch, or fan at all. All you do is take it off-easy.
My truck NEVER gets to half way on the water temp gauge. Pulling my boat, long highway road trips, idling long periods, I turn the a/c switch on, that runs the stock electric continuously, even if the a/c compressor isn't on.
