Message: So I went to one of the other (larger) military bases yesterday and they have an auto hobby shop there. I have never been in it, but driven past many times. So my brakes are bad and I think, what the hell... can't be that hard. So I change my front rotors, no prob whatsoever. Anyway, all the tools I needed and the jack and pretty much anything you need, they have at this shop for you to use... for free. I was thinking to myself, wow I wonder what all you can do here? So I stroll around and see what other people are doing and there are a lot of people changing tires and flushing fluids and this and that. But there is this one guy that is pulling his engine. I'm like "damn, you ain't gonna be finished today" Apparently you can even leave your car/truck overnight or until you finish. freekin cool. So anyway, they have this room that has all kinds of machines in it for all types of engine work, like porting and polishing and I guess whatever you think you want to do? All for free. Now that's just cool. So I know nothing about porting and polishing ANYTHING, or stroking engines. But I've heard many people talk about using a dremel to bore out your TB. Isn't that what the fastman and people do to make the TB's flow better? Or is the TB a totally different/ bigger TB? Could I take mine in there and do it just as good and save myself $200? What else could a guy with little to no knowhow do to their truck in this shop, with every tool/ machine possible for use, for free?
Sorry for being so long.

Message: What base was that? They usually charge a small hourly fee, about $1-2. And if you get stuck, the guys that work there are usually pretty helpfull.
Anyway, about you TB. I would not try to do that by hand. It's not rocket science, but it does take some skill and special tools. And then you have to fabricate larger blades to go in the TB. Not a job for a beginner.
I would buy the new TB from somebody like Fastman, and then go to the Auto Hobby Shop to install it.

Message: Well ok, so I know a little more than maybe I made it sound. I have taken my TB/intake off to clean it already. Changed my spark plugs. Change my tstat. (that sucked a little) And made a 4" hose come out of the front of the air box and into the grill. Best fresh air you can get right there. All of this was done at home. But I haven't got brave enough to get that lip out of my TB with a dremel. (I have a 2000 4.7 QC) stupid 65/62 TB. Tempted to do that this weekend? But if it would be easier and turn out better to do it on a machine at the hobby shop then I would.
Oh, and the base is Camp Lejeune, NC

Message: No need to fabricate larger blades to go in the TB; and it can be done by hand. Search the older posts for some tips on how to do it.
