Subject: higher gear IP: Logged
Message: I have a '99 R/T. The engine revs 2500RPM at 75MPH. I'd like to change the overdrive gear in the transmission so at 75 the engine is revving 2000RPM.
Is this even a possible swap? Would it be easy for a transmission shop to do?
Thanks!

Message: I've never heard of that. Don't know if the parts are available. But also consider a Gear Vendors Overdrive unit. It's a relativly easy bolt on that you can do at home.

Message: Are you talking about reducing your gear ratios? If so you should be looking to get yourself a 3.55 and its a simple replacement. $100 bucks in labor, couple hours at the shop and whatever you can get for parts.

Message: I have considered getting higher gears in the rear axle. I don't think 3.55s would drop the RPM as much as I'd like it to. So I'd probably have to go with 3.21s. 3.21s in an R/T doesn't sound fun and I think I'd lose quite a bit of low end acceleration. That's why I wanted to do the overdrive gear swap in the transmission, if that is possible. The only drop in engine RPM I want is at highways speeds when overdrive is engaged.
Where would the gear vendors overdrive unit go? I'd presume behind the transmission so would I need to get a shorter driveshaft? Anyone else have any ideas?

As I understand it, the unit replaces the rear of the transmission housing, but is longer. So the driveshaft will need to be shortened.
The stock transmission OD is .69. With a 31 inch tire and 3.92 rear gear, you're turning about 2300 rpms at 75 mph.
Adding the GV unit with a .71 OD, will make total OD about .50. That puts you around 1600 rpm's at 75 mph. Any slower than that and you won't make enough power to keep your speed up. Any small hill and you'll be downshifting again.

Message: Wow. That's expensive. I was thinking about eventually getting the 6 speed manual tranny setup for my R/T. Sounds awesome though and would really help me out, I just wish it was less money.
