Subject: 340 Dakota IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1970 Duster 340 that is in bad shape. So I was thinking of rebuilding the engine and putting it in my 97 Dakota. Since the 340 block is about the same as a 360 I was wondering if it would bolt on fairly easily? The Dakata is currently a 4-cylinder.
Thanks,
Chad

I doubt he really even did the swap.
From a 4cyl Dak to LA SB its A LOT of work and yes the electronics will be a mother if you plan on using EFI.

Message: That Blue Truck with the White Stripes in the picture has a 340 in it. Lil Punisher will just have to Punish you for not believing him. I have seen his truck and know for a fact it has a 340. Jon Davis did some of his motor work for him. Jon also put a 340 in a 92 Purple Dakota that has been in Sport Truck and Mopar Muscle. Lil Punisher, it is not nice to change your screen name to try to fool people. Santa will just have to Punish you. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Message: last i heard, he has not done the swap yet. Someone was complaining about how slow his truck was for having done an engine swap and all he could comment was that he only ran the 318 at the track... never did say if he got the 340 in there.

Message: I didn't know i missed so much. Oh thanks for the nice comments. As for the 340 swap it happened drove from maine to indiana to columbus ohio for the mopar nationals. Truck w/ 340 has run in the high thiteens blowing the tranny. I have not touched any nitrous to it yet. Jon davis is having a tranny built for me right now. Hopefully i'll se 11's in the spring.

Message: You heard i hadnt done it yet? the 318 was yanked out in winter of 2001. I suppose i didnt put a dana 60 in it either, or long tube headers orfuel injection or return fuel system or fuel cell etc. "Sounds like" That was a very creative comment you must of stayed up all night thinking of that.

Message: the truck should run low 13's in the 1/4 all motor maybe high 12's. The tranny is stopping me from that right now. Well its now junk but shiftinf 1 to 2 2 to 3 it would hit the rev limiter. I had to let off let it shift then hit back into it.. On nitrous i should be in the 11's (I better start on the roll cage.)

Message: all you have to do is find a magnum 360, punch it .040 over and have a 318 crankshaft mains built up and put it in and you have a 340 with all of the fixings for fuel injection. Its not that big of deal. You don't have to use an old block or anything. It will have all censor locations, the magnum intakes and everything. It would make it a whole lot easier.

Message: Now you have to start with a motor already 40 over. Plus he has the 340 already. Plus that just would be a destroked 360 to make 340 ci Its still not a old school 340.

Message: Brilliant dumbass, if you check a .040 360 with a 318 crank is an old school 340 exact. With the added ease of already having the current mounts, crank sensor location and everything. So what you get is a new model 340 with the same bore and stroke as the original. The 340 had better heads back then but you can heads now for a magnum from KRC the outflow almost anything available for a standard A motor, so why waiste an old school 340.

Message: Gonna be hard pressed to get a mag 318 block that has enough metal to be bored .040 over and still bereliable. Alot of them after being sonic checked have really thin walls after a .030 overbore, but it just depends on the block. the older LA motors had alot more metal in the castings. I dont beleive the 318 crank is an exact swap into the 360 block. I think there may be an aftermarket 3.58in throw crank with 273/318/340 sized journals that will swap right in since the premag and mag cranks are the same.

Message: who said anything about using a 318 block, you use a 360 block because it is a 4.000 bore, a stock 340 is a 4.040 bore and a 3.31 stroke. You take a 360 block punch it .040 and now you have a 340 bore and take a 318 crankshafts and have the mains built up to the 360 journal size that I have mentioned before and you have a stock 340 because a 318 is the same stroke. I have done mentioned this all before so please read just a little harder, and by the way I've got a G/SA 1969 Barracuda 383 which is currently running .070 over with no problems. .040 never hurt nobody.
