Subject: Aftermarket Ignition System Question

I am seriously looking to purchase an MSD or Jacob's ignition system. Some of the questions i have are as follows:

1. Where is the best place to mount the ignition box, (in cab or engine compartment)

2. Once you have the igition, did you notice interference with the radio? Were you able to resolve this issue, if it did cause radio interference?

3. If, you use an aftermarket ignition has it ever failed on you while you were on the road?

4. I have read some horror stories about Jacob's ignitions, just wondering if anyone has had good luck with them?

5. Would you guys suggest an aftermarket ignition for a daily driver? The reliability factor is my main concern.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

First off, don't expect to gain a lot of extra power, because you won't get it. What you will get is a little easier starting, and maybe a smoother idle. You can also get an ignition based rev limiter, if that's important to you.
The ads always say things like, "50,000 volt spark" or something like that. In reality, you will get as much spark as your engine needs - and no more - up to 50K volts. If you're running nitrous, blowers, high compression, etc, then you may need that much power to create a spark. It's pretty complicated, and I admit that I don't understand all the science behind it (nor do I care to).
Anyway, maybe this can answer some of your questions.

1. Proper mounting is critical. You have to protect from water and heat. If you pay the extra bucks for the marine version, then you don't have to be concerned about water. Try and mount it behind the dash.

2. If properly installed, you won't have any computer or radio interferance.

3. I was using a Crane unit on a '95 5.2L. The rev limiter went haywire one winter day and started working at half speed. I turned off the rev limiter and went on. Also, I was concerned about the same thing. So I used bullet connecters when taping in to the factory ignition syste, If it ever did die, all I had to do was unplug the box and plug the factory harness back together.

4. Don't know.

5. Anything digital will work fine. Crane makes some very nice toned down units for stock daily drivers. Spending $350 for a MSD 7AL would be foolish. I have a Crane Fireball HI-6S for my FFR Cobra.

I have a '01 5.9 R/T using the Jacobs Pro Street Ignition and I love it. I made a "L" shape bracket that is about 6 inches wide and mounted it on the firewall above my brake booster cylinder. It has the coil and computer on it. I also ran a "L" shape piece of aluminum to support it and used one of the fuel rail bolts and a header/manifold bolt to mount it. I know its tough to get a picture from what I just tried to explain but its up in an area of the engine compartment that gets the cooling air and is up high enough from heat. Not alot of room in an R/T engine bay to put anything in.

The Pro Street, Jacobs claims, and in my humble opinion, I agree, burns 99.8% of the fuel that comes out the tail pipe. I have a chrome tip on mine and I have never seen it get black on the inside yet and I have had it for over 2yrs now. Really clean burning and I figure if the fuel is "all" getting burned I have to be making some more horse power.

If you go with Jacobs, get the in-cab monitoring LED's also. Lites up green when the truck is running and will lite up red if something is wrong. You can also get codes from it if you get unlucky enough to see the red lite pop on.

I went the whole thing, Pro Street, Energy Core Plug Wires, Autolite Copercore 3923's gapped at (I think .065), In-cab LED monitor. Maybe just a mental thing but I love it. I also enjoy snatching open the hood and seeing the blue anodized goodies under the hood.

This is my experience with Jacobs. Great so far.

I have the Jacobs Pro Street Ultra Team for sale. I have everything but the plug wires. It was on a 99 w/318 for almost a year before I sold the truck. I will look to see if I still have all the stuff and I will sell it for $200 obo. I payed $392. for it 2 years ago.

Just curious,

Did you guys notice Better gas mileage with the aftermarket ignition?

My 5.9 just sucks down gas like if gas was just $.50 per gallon. booo hooo

At 1.50 per gallon or higher, I'm gonna have to sell my kindney.

At $2.00 per gallon, i will have to sell one of my balls. lol

I got better 2-3 mpg better on the highway and sometimes got 1-2 in town. Those numbers were on a good day. (I had a lead foot)

The R/T's get pretty poor gas milage with the high rear end ratio. Cruising at 2k or better doesnt help the cause. As far as getting better gas milage, yes I did, but just 1-2mpg. still better than no improvement.

The price "wuba" is selling his for is a good deal. I paid a butt load for mine, so much that I am embarrassed to say. But its a sweet install. Simple plug and play. Hardest part is finding the mounting spot for it.

I have a Jacobs Pro Street on a 92 4x4 Dakota with the 5.2 that starting to die. Jacobs ignitions claims an additional 12 rwhp. I certainly noticed a difference, but Jacobs warranty and reliability is pretty bad in my opinion. I have an MSD-6a on 1997 daily driver and have had no issues with it. I will change out the Japuuuck for an MSD-6a.

Just purchased an MSD 6A and Accel coil (42,000 volts).

Looking to install this thanksgiving weekend. Any suggestions as far as spark plug gap on a 5.9?

fastyz400, I would say that I felt about the same performance with the MSD as I did withe the Jacobs. I think you made a wise purchase. MSD reliabilty is far better than Jacobs. Larry from J and J Auto on the V6 board says that you will feel a pretty good increase by purchasing
the Autolite AP3923's and gapping them to 60 thousands when you install them Larry has tested just about every kind of spark plug for the dak's, he says to stay away from the Bosch Platium +4's. I hope this information helps.

But, Does Larry have a V6 or a 5.9. Would the gapping be different on the 5.9?

I also notice a lot of other people say they didn't feel a difference. I feel that, that just can't be.

If, you have multiple spark spanning 20 deg of the crank, your gonna burn the fuel completely.

I could see, you may not get much of a performance increase, if you kept the stock coil. But, with a higher voltage coil. I believe, it's gonna be a complete burn.

As far as Jacobs, They are nice units, but, like you guys said before, they are unreliable. Did, a little search on the internet, and found many unhappy customers.

Information was very informative. However, i still would like to know of others with 5.9, at what gap they are running?

Don't have the time or paitence to keep increasing or decreasing my spark plug gap. lol

I would like to have a good start point. Like .055 or something like that.

Just wanted to let everyone know, that i did notice a performance and milage gain going with the following combinations.

MSD 6A - by it self just notice a little difference

Accel Super Coil - 42,000 volt: Very noticable improvement

You must use MSD or Accel wires to gain in performance. I went with MSD 80 ohms / ft. Very low resistance. $80

Only Talyor wires are better at 50 ohms / ft.

Mid-Range and throtle response has greatly improved.

Very happy with the setup.

Went with MSD for the reliability and Accel coil, mainly, because, accel makes a better coil.

Still working on plug gap, gonna start out at .055, will let you guys know how it works on the 5.9.
