Subject: Mopar performance PCM vs Hypertech? IP: Logged
Message: Hey, I have a 98, 318 Dakota with 80,000 miles. I have been told that I can buy a performance PCM. Is it worth buying vs. a hypertech?
What gains can I get with this computer.
Where can I get a performance PCM cheap?
Can you get this PCM and use a hypertech or would that be doing nothing?
Thanks

Message: A couple years ago Hot Rod did a story on the Magnum engine. The Dodge performance computer didn't gain enough HP to make it worth the trouble or expense. You also have to use premium fuel only, and can't tow much with it.
A month or so ago I used the Hypertech reprogrammer on my 2001 5.9. Made a huge improvement in performance, I don't need premium fuel, I can tow with it (supposedly), and and I can change it back to stock in a couple of minutes.
I made a long post about this not too long ago. A search for "Hypertech" will find it.

Message: Get the Mopar pcm. It's the single best mod you can get on a stock or mildly modded truck.

Message: Bill, not trying to be rude at all, but do you have real data to back up that statement? Like dyno sheets? Time slips? Personal experiance? Again, not a flame, just a search for real data.

Message: I first ran my Dakota at the strip in 98. With the stock computer (found out much later that it was the CA version), my first 3 runs were 16.7, 16.8, 16.7. I put in the MP PCM for the 4th run and got 16.1.
Last Sunday with the same MP PCM (with other performance mods that complement each other .. still all motor), I ran a 13.98 @ 99.85.

Message: What Ticats said. That jives with everything else I've heard. The Mopar PCM is good for a solid 20hp + on the dyno - depending on your drivetrain combo i.e. auto, stick 2 or 4wd etc.

Message: .boB - not trying to be rude either, but I think we might ask you the same thing. You think the Dodge performance computer didn't gain enough, and requires premium fuel; while the Hypertech makes a huge improvement, and doesn't require premium. Most of the improvement from both comes from timing advance, and its more advance that requires higher octane. So from what you are saying, it would be likely that the Mopar performance computer would give the biggest gains. I've also seen you post that the 4.7 has a peaky power band; I wonder if you have any real data to back that up. My experience would suggest that you are mistaken on that claim.

Message: i saw on KRC's dyno page that the mopar pcm made like only one horsepower but about 25 ft-lbs of torque.

Message: any ohc motor is going to have a peaky band. that don't even start oulling until 3200-3500rpms. that's why they lack low end torque compared to the 5.2 and 5.9.

Message: Skitter - I am sure that is a myth. The location of the cam in the engine is not what dictates the torque characteristics. That myth may have come about because many were first exposed to overhead cams in smaller, higher reving engines, but it is simply not true.

Message: Kowalski is correct. Cam timing and cam overlap is what determines the power curve for the most part.
