Subject: A novel about a chirping noise IP: Logged
Message: 99 Dakota V8 4x4 SLT Club Cab
automatic - 50k miles - purchased brand new
I like this truck fine but the chirping is gonna
send me right over the edge. Here's the deal,
when the truck is slowing down I get a very
loud chirping sound that is in sync with the
engines "deccelleration". That is to say, when
the engine is idling down, or "deccellerating",
the chirping kicks in at the same rythm as the
engine until the truck comes to a stop.
The chirping does not happen when in neutral
or park and you rev the engine and let it idle
down, only when the truck is moving. If I put
the truck in neutral while idling down to a stop
the noise can still occur.
The sound is heard through the dash and
side windows when the windows are up.
When the windows are down it is just as loud
or louder and sounds like it's coming from
underneath or the engine block.
As I've read in some archived messages from
others, it is very sporadic but when it gets
going it seems to get on a roll and stick
around for a few weeks. I think it may be
related to a change in temperature, however, it
happens when it's hot or cold outside. (I live
in Minnesota and New York.)
I've replaced the serpentine bel and the belt
tensioner at the dealership and it seemed to
help a little but the sound came back not long
after. I read in another message about a very
similar sounding problem that replacing the
leak detection pump solved the problem.
CAN ANYONE RELATE OR HELP ME WITH
THIS PROBLEM? There's nothing like driving
a new, perfectly good truck and having it chirp
like your grandmother's old station wagon to
put you in a bad frame of mind.

Message: I had the same problem with my '00 Quad Cab 4X4. The dealer changed all U-Joints, both front & rear & the annoying chirping is gone.

Message: U-joint is correct. I developed the annoying chirp..sounded just like a cricket. Changed my belt, checked all pulleys, greased all zerks, jacked the rear axle on stands and put in reverse, drive, no chirping...jacked the front wheel and there it was. It turned out to be the double cardan joint. The U-joints had no play (that I could tell), but the ball and socket between the two joints was relatively dry and dirty.....I cleaned it, greased it and all is now good.
