Subject: 318 Build up by Car Craft IP: Logged
Message: I was looking over the latest issue of Car Craft(Dec 2003) and found that they have done a built-up of a 318 that may be useful for you guys with that engine. They ended up with 400 HP for about $4500.00 when it was all done. The url is http://www.carcraft.com/howto/116_0401_318/
Enjoy,

Message: True, but Car Craft made a LA 318 into a copy of what is in our trucks.
From the article:
"...with a production iron-head 318 at near 1.23hp per cube with a street hydraulic cam. The engine had over 10.5 inches of vacuum at a 900-rpm idle, but just enough rump to get noticed."
They used our stock magnum heads and converted them to run on a LA block. The whole setup would cost us much less to duplicate.
In fact, the noticable differences from our stock motors are pistons, cam and the M1 intake. They even appeared to use stock rockers. (I'm not mentioning the carb because most of us have MPI.)
The torque numbers aren't too shabby either, though I wish they could have shown us what the torque was at 1500RPM.
Dyno Results

Message: Haven't caught the article yet, but I'm not really seeing how the engine is more like a late model Dakota. It had a carb? They bolted on Magnum heads and an M1 for Magnum, popped in a hotter cam, and? You mentioned pistons. Don't get me wrong. Not raggin' you, I just don't see much from your description that makes it like a late Dak engine except the heads/intake. Goin' with Magnums is a great way to get good flowing heads without heavily porting LA heads. Converting to Mags does away with the air injection, which is a convenient way to fool the emissions guys, but it seems to me they just did the obvious. Take good flowing heads/intake, carb, and a hot cam. This makes hp, but the cost? Did they build a new engine and include this in the overall price? If they used stock rockers then the "conversion" of the Magnum heads for LA block was nothing more than running hollow pushrods to oil the rockers. It's a great conversion, but they're pretty late to the party. Aren't these the same mooks that managed to recently embarrass the 360 with such poor performance numbers against the Ford and Chevy V8's? They had some rediculous cam with huge lift..no vacuum. I'm curious as to what cam they used in the 318. Gonna look for that issue.

Message: I'm saying it's not an outrageous combo. I think it could be duplicated fairly easily for a lot less on our trucks.

Here is a M1 for $350.
http://www.hughesengines.com/general/fuel_injection/stage1_throttle_bodies.asp Stage 1 TB $165
www.compcams.com CRS 280H CAM & LIFTER KIT $254.90
Your PCM can be reprogramed for $500-600
Assuming that your heads and cyl are in good shape, you have the basic motor for less than $1300. Your engine would have 9:1 compression instead of 10:1 compression, but I bet the minimal loss of power could be made up in other ways.
The car craft folks made an engine not too far from what many already have.

Message: 4500 for that is SOOO much bull. not only did hot rod build a 318 with as much power for WAAY less, theyve built a 500+hp/500+tq 500 caddy that almost noone makes parts for for less than 4500.
i see what you're saying about the similarities but i think that the fuel injected engine would have its own problems making those changes and that power, and i doubt anyone here wants to convert to carbs.
