Subject: Flowmaster makes crappy mufflers IP: Logged
Message: I had a 40 series Delta flow installed a year ago. Today I did a full inspection under the hood and under the truck. Don't ask why. Army LOL. Anyway I started the muffler inspection and found out that the front hanger was hanging loose. I started the truck and realized that there's a hole near the upper front of the 1 year old Flowmaster Muffler. The muffler also started to look old and rusty around the welds after 6 months. what a waste of cash. I live in NJ but really don't want to blame that on the SALT, like I said the muffler was installed 3/21/02 (1 winter)

Message: probably whoever installed it did a poor job, usually welds aren't left exposed, usually they are coated with some form of high temp stuff that ensures a good seal.
I've had a 40 Series flowmaster on my truck for about 3 years, and it still looks almost brand new, no rust, and no holes.
But Flowmaster makes a great Muffler, sorry you seem to have had bad luck with it.

Message: Which welds? the ones that came with the muffler or the ones used to install it? CAuse if it is the ones used to install it you only have to blame the isntaller for either not using the right filler or not protecting the welds as mentioned above.
If it is the welded that came with the muffler than yeah that doesn't say much unless you live on the coast / in a salt state and it isn't SS. Cause if you don't think it will start rusting in a salt/coast state you are nuts.
Oh yeah the hanger ... isn't that part of the install and not a part of the muffler as you bought it? if so then the same comments apply.

Message: I'm in NJ. The only time the truck is exposed to salt is during the winter(1 year). The rust is on the Floomaster welds and the installer's welds. I called the installer today and he promised to take care of it. Still that doesn't explain how Flow-M welds looks like crap. I really loke the sound of the V8 through the chambers but refuse to weld or replace a muffler at such a young age.
I heard that Dynomax makes some good muffs too. I need to know which is the right application for me, I like the deep mellow rumble(Alarm-setter-offer) that scares the little Rice-Cars

Message: I've had at least half a dozen Flows on my vehicles - only one rusted out (welds on the muffler itself).
The only Dynamax I've had on a Ford F-150 rusted in 6 months. - Had a good sound to it up to that point though.
...just my 2 cents.

Message: yeah I have had a 40 series original flow on my truck since about a week after I got it (01 dakota R/T) but other that just some dirt it looks brand new. I know that it has only been 1 winter but I have looked under cars that maybe 2 years old and from new england states and its starting to rust the frame. that may have something to do with it.

Message: My flowmaster works great and I haven't had any trouble. What it may be is the heat. I don't have the problem since my V6 runs real cool, but I know that they actually recommend a muffler heat shield for the flowmasters. It was on a little sheet that came with mine. Not sure, but that might be it.

Message: Eddi - if you live in a "salt" state, get a stainless steel muffler, PERIOD!!
If you don't require your truck to sound like a vehicle with a busted exhaust manifold, might I suggest either the Magnaflow #14256, or the Borla #40665 - assuming you have the 4.7.

Message: I'm no muffler expert, but in searching this site it seems clear that if one dismisses Flowmaster, Magnaflow is the most popular - certainly over a Borla.
Determine your piping diameter and if your muffler is a center in/center out, offset/center, or offset/offset and go to the Magnaflow site for fitment. The SS Oval 5"x8" in the proper piping diameter and in/out locations would be a very good way to go.
This muffler is not at all intrusive inside the cab - has a low rumble outside, especially when you nail it. It is one of the more quite mufflers - too quite for some. Perfect for pthers.
Hope this helps. BTW - search the site for comments on Magnaflow and make up your own mind.
Good luck,

Message: In fact, check with Magnaflow - for the 5.2 they may recommend the larger 5"x11" oval body universal fit, stainless muffler. Husker Exhaust has a good internet price.
