Subject: "porting stock heads" on a R/T dakota
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 1998 R/T and want to port the original magnum heads. Whatīs the amount of power would that add to my truck? Can I replace the factory head gaskets with felpro 1008? Are these gaskets good for iron heads and high HP and tourque?Iīm planning on doing other mods...
I will replace stock rockers with mopars 1.7īs roller rockers and better springs.
I donīt have money enough to by the R/T heads.
Thanks.

I know guys that have ported stock heads with good results in terms of power. It's risky because the stock heads don't have a lot of meat around the valves to play with. If you port them too much, you increase the risk of putting cracks in your heads. Ray Block has '92 318 truck that he ported the stock heads on. Here's his truck on dragtruk:

Nice guy. If you e-mail him, he can give you the heads up on how he did his. I can appreciate not having the money to spring for a new set of heads.

The Fel Pro 1008's would work great for you. The Mopar rockers are okay buy you can get Comp Cams or Crower 1.7's for less money and they're stronger. Good luck!

Thanks for your help, Bill.
I will send him an e-mail and ask if it was a good mod on his truck and how was that "porting work" made.
Are the heads much different between the 1998 dak R/T and 92 dak 318ci?

Thanks again!

No problem. 318 and 360 Magnum heads are identical so whatever info he gives would be applicable.

I've talked to a few people who have R/T's and after they got their heads ported to 2.02 (around there), they gained up 75rwhp thats been tested by dynos!

I'll believe that when I see the dynos. Thats highly unlikely. Maybe with the P&P 2.02 R/T heads and a custom cam you will see that kind of horse power increase. Definately not with a set of P&P stockers. I'd say 30hp at most from P&P stock heads and then you run a big risk of cracking them.

I agree with R/T that 30rwhp would be the maximum in power(75hp just for Big Blocks, I was told).
The krc performance says that polishing the heads is not good for better flow (less than 1%) and is only used on their race heads....
So I will only port mine anyways.
RTDKOTA, Did you get 20+ horses by porting yours?

b1IIyw,

Really? I've been told that there's plenty of material there to port with.....I plan on porting my stockers and have been told from two different machinists that there would be the potential for 30-40 hp, with stock cam. I'll most likely save $500 or so using the stockers. I'm also on a limited income......-Justin

Yes, it can be done. But cracking on stock heads is extremely common. For example, I was down at KRC's shop in Florida. He had a dozen stock heads that he had replaced with R/T heads. Nearly everyone had cracks. So you just want to be careful. If you're going to take the time to pull them and port them, it might be worth having them magged at the same time just to be sure.
