Message: So what'd the best call for a cold air intake for my 2000 4.7 QC? Volant? K&N? Airraid? Homebrew? Something else?
I'd love to hear what you all have to say...
Thanks

Message: I was asking the same question, and it's however u feel.... me personally, i felt that the volant was more direct and less restrictive than the K&N, and as for the homebrew... i'd rather spend 200 bucks more for something i know will work, and not melt... or whatever.

Message: Well, it's true that using an intake "could" cause loss of performance if it's drawing in warm engine air vs. cooler direct airflow from the outside. When it's hot outside, the stock setup (or a true CAI that's drawing air from outside the engine bay) will be most effective. When it gets colder outside, you can pretty much use any intake you want and it will provide increased airflow for the truck. You really need more work done than just an intake to realize these gains. Don't believe the hype about 10-20 HP just from bolting on this intake. If you read the small print, it's 10-20 HP on severely modded cars/trucks, most of them forced induction. Our trucks "may" see 5 HP from that single mod on a good day. But if you combined that intake with a TB, cams, new upper intake plenum, and a free flowing exhaust, well, then you have a significant increase in crank and wheel HP...

Message: I researched this question for a couple of months last year, and after weighing all the input from this site and elsewhere, I came away convinced that, in terms of increasing power, there is little REAL data to support the use of a so-called "cold" air intake. This is especially true if you intend to install one without utilizing the benifits of a flow-thru muffler, such as offered by Magnaflow and others.
Installing an intake is more for looks and increased sound than it is for actual performance, in my opinion. Some intakes can actually reduce torque slightly - there does appear to be some data to support this, and one manufacturer even admitted this to be true in communication to me over the internet (360 Air).
What did I do? 3" homebrew (sch 40 ABS), painted black running right to the stock airbox, K&N drop in filter, and removed the piece of rubber? shield next to the radiator on the airbox side of the truck. Next will come the Magnaflow muffler.
Did any or all of this actually increase my power?
Beats the sh+t out of me.

Message: Thanks for all the input. I have a list of mods I'd like to do,the first two to get the truck breathing right with intake and exhaust. Demon, what dual exhaust did you install? Did you get headers too?
Thanks

Message: Well, I don't want too much more noise...I'd like to get started with a cold air intake, throttle body, headers and a dual exhaust. I need advice on the exhaust too. Cat back or complete for example. I also want to upgrade he front brake rotors as I've heard the stock ones are fairly problematic. That's the short list, but I'm open to suggestions.

Message: You'd do a lot better to start with the Jeep HO cams and or the Leach PCM flash - much more bang for the buck than the mods you're contemplating.

Message: Thanks Kowalski. The Mike Leach Flash is in the plan too. But I heard that it's better to do the other mods first and drive for a few hours before flashing the PCM. Any comment? And the HO cams...do you have those on your truck?
Thanks.

Message: I did K&N drop in, ported 68 mm TB, HO cams, then Leach flash in that order. I think I would have noticed more gain from the ported TB if I had done it after the other mods but got it when I found a good deal on it. Now that I upgraded the other stuff its time for me to think about some exhaust work. I'd recomend the cams, then the flash, then the other stuff. Don't see any need to do exhaust first; there might not be any gains to be had from exhaust work without the other mods to our 4.7s. I haven't seen any dyno gain printouts for intake systems for stock 4.7 (although I heard there was one showing gais for K&N FIPK, but only at high revs). Seems like if someone could actually document gains from something like the ststem offered in the post above, they'd sell a bunch of them. Prove it works and I'd buy!

Message: So why did you go with the K&N drop-in instead of the FIPK? And which TB did you go with? Fastman?
The cams sound like they are key. Did you just order them from a Jeep dealer or what?
Thanks

Message: I've been playing around with the intake setup on mine over the last few months since I've had my truck.
I've done it two ways:
1) 3 inch ABS going down behind the headlight through a hole I cut with a 3 inch K&N cone style filter behind the fog light.
I noticed a slight increae, really only when I hit 3200 RPM's and up. And naturally the sucker was VERY VERY loud.
2) I removed the cone style K&N mainly because I worried about driving through 2 foot deep water crossings this coming winter.
So I installed the stock filter box back under the hood with the K&N drop in filter I allready had. Then I kept my 3 inch ABS that's insulated going from the box to the intake manifold and going from the box to the hole I cut behind the headlight (in hopes I'd have more outside air there).
The first mehtod seemed "peaky" around 3200 RPM's but no increase in power down low.
I towed and drove my truck up the same big hills I allways drive up so I do have something to base the increase on. Honestly I still don't think I got any increase for towing over the stock setup.
I will leave my intake as I have it now because I like being able to see and access the engine better than how it was with that large and almost gay looking stock air hat thingie!

Message: The K&N FIPK for our 4.7 wasn't out yet when I bought, and I'm mainly interested in mods that work at the low and midrange rpms since it is a truck. The ported 68 mm TB came from a newer truck (2000 came with 65mm),nice home port job (thanks again, Chris). Shop around for your best deal on the cams (got mine from Monicatti Chrysler). Butt dyno says the Leach flash is worth about the same as the cams, they're both good mods that work well together.

Message: Any smog issued you are aware of with the cams different lift/duration? I'm in Cali, so it's a real question. And the cams I ask for while shopping around are the stock cams from a 2000 4.7 HO jeep motor?

Message: From what I read the HO cams are 200 degreees duration...
So the next step up on the aftermarket up from that was the 206 cams.
Has anyone with a 4X4 used these 206 cams? I'd like more power, but need to keep bottom end torque for towing.

Message: Yes, just the stock cams for the 4.7 HO Jeep. I would think we'd pass if a Jeep does. We have the Cali emissions regs here too, but they're not using the sniffer on vehicles with the obdii ports, just plugging into the port if they check at all. I heard a lot of states were doing this, have they made this change where you are ?

Can you tell me which TB you bought?
