Subject: Hard to find t-stat IP: Logged
Message: What is the deal here?
I have looked all day on the internet and at the so-called auto parts stores for a 180 t-stat for my '03 4.7
So far I hear the Robertshaw is P/N GT755-180
None of the places I checked today (Autozone/Checker/Pep Boys) has that or any Robertshaw t-stats.
So I came back home and searched some more.
SOmeone said the Super Stant P/N is 65358
I went back to the closest Checker Auto and found that one on the shelf but it looks like what would probably fit your 5.2/5.9 engines I expected the 4.7 to look like the reverse poppet or whatever style like what I installed into our '98 Chysler sedan since it is mounted on the inlet instead of outlet of the engine coolant lines. I also checked Speedtweaks, after finally finding a working website, did not specify any part numbers.
BTW the search engine here doesn't give very usable results.
OK. Without being flamed I'd like to know for absolute sure what t-stat I need and maybe pics of it if possible. I know there are a lot of people here who like to help, thanks in advance.

Message: Go to NAPA and get a 180 degree thermo,I think its called a superstat.Sorry don't know the part#.

Message: For what its worth..my local Dodge parts man told me that the 4.7 uses a 195 degree stat to properly atomize the fuel for best fuel economy. Has anyone seen MPG numbers differ with 180 stat?

Message: Also, the Robert Shaw, and others, fit the 5.2/5.9, as well as the 4.7. For Sure. I guess the 3.9 for that matter also.

I'd be surprised (but relieved) if the new 4.7 is the same as the 5.2/5.9

Message: Check out some of the companies that make superchargers. I know the kenne bell site (kennebell.net) has them for the 4.7. I got one with my kit. Not sure how good there jprice is going to be................

Message: The Robert Shaw GT755-180 definitely fits a 4.7. I had one in my '02 for over 20,000 miles with no problems.

There. I installed the Stant superstat #65358 t-stat into my 4.7 Dak.
I had to mod it a bit because the t-stat is really for the 3.9/5.2/5.9
It was difficult finding any real answers on this forum about doing this swap and there was no direct replacement at the local auto parts stores (Ricers-R-Us). After 2 weeks of asking and waiting some intelligent people let me know that I could use the t-stat for the other V8's on my 4.7
This was the easiest t-stat I have ever accessed.
A few weeks ago I had to remove the entire PCM and other goodies on our Chrysler Cirrus to change that t-stat. This sucker was a piece of cake.
I took some pics of the project and added them to my list of mods on my website.

Message: i found one at autozone for my 02 dakota 4.7 and no my gas millage #'s weren't affected at all I also installed one on my wife's 1500 which is also an 02 and they work great.

does this thing have any flexibilty at all? Didn't think so.
the fender well pulls outside air from under the windshield.
You essentially have a snorkel, probably pretty airtight, that takes things, water, mud, etc, from down by the road, and sucks it right up to the TB. Have you tried it in a deep puddle of water yet? Can you say 'hydrolocked'?
And no offense, but do you really think that you're getting any colder air by wrapping that thing, in what now looks like a cheap 'B' sci-fi movie prop.
A+ for effort, C- for actual effectiveness

Message: Well well yes I do think "wrapping it" retards heat transfer from what is usally pretty damn hot from under the hood.
Yes I've driven thru mud puddles and rain, etc. My snorkel as you call it is not any more open to dirt and water than say a open element air filter hanging on a tube under the hood!
Out of the few mods I've done that intake maybe all that I've been able to "feel". At the upper RPM's it has some more power. Enough to make the shift noticably harder.
Down low, I don't think I've noticed any improvements at all with all combined mods.
I'll admit what I think works and what I think does not.
In fact, this morning I installed a 160 degree, that's right, 160 degree t-stat to experiemt. Hell, this is the easiest t-stat to change ever so why not?
I drove from Phoenix to Payson. That's from near sea level to 5000+ alt.
It was even cooler today than it has been and I didn't notice any improvements going up the hills. The gauge went down pretty low except when doing 100 MPH up big hills. I've got the tow package BTW. May have bigger radiator, etc.
So when I do get around to it I will probably put my 180 t-stat back in because I will be driving this in the snow in a few months and will need that heater to be HOT or my family will scream at me when they come from the cold snow into a luke warm truck!
My intake is less exposed to dirt than one hanging on a tube under the hood. I used a deflector shield to make sure of that and nothing from the wheel well will ever make it to my air filter so there's not really a chance of hydro-lock (yes I've heard of it. Done it to ATV's)
I'll tell you the best improvement from my intake set up. THE ENGINE IS NO LONGER CLUTTERED BY THAT REDICULOUS AIR HAT!
If I do change anything on it again, I may remove the K&N open element filter and install the stock filter box inline with my tubes. This will ease in access to the filter and I think it had more filter area. But I don't think air gets from the windshield and then all the way thru the fender as well as my tube up front.
At least I didn't waste $200 on a filter and tube from some rip off online store!
