Subject: 1/4 mile times and shifting RPM IP: Logged
Message: Alright i recently bought a brand new (03) dakota 4x4 reg cab, with the 4.7 and a stick. I took it to the track and ran a 16.3 at 93mph. I was readin through some other topics and found some of you guys with almost the same truck running 15.9. So my question is what are you doing better then me. I launched at maybe 1500 rpm and rolled into the throttle and barly spun, I shifted at about 4800rpm. but I recently found out that my redline is almost 6,000rpm. What do the automatics shift at?
Also is it possible for my truck to beat an 03 hemi ram quad cab 4x4?
The only two things i lack is the limited slip and the better gear ratio. But my friend with the hemi has both of those.
So any input would help thanx

Message: Shifting at 4800? No wonder LOL! I'm sure your RPM's start pretty low in the next gear when you shift that early.
The great thing about the 4.7 is descent top end power that doesn't fall flat on it's face! Stay in gear as long as you can without hitting the rev limiter!
Oh well. I have the auto and it almost gets redline just leaving it in drive. I sometimes shift it manually but occasionally hit the redline, that sucks when that happens!

Message: Well the 4.7L does wind up to 6,000 rpms, but starts loosing power around 5,200 rpms. I shift from first to second at 6,000 rpms (only because it hits that real fast after spinning for the first 30 feet and spins another 10 to 15 feet 1st to 2nd), then I shift second to third around 5,300 rpms (and this spins for about 5 more feet), then third to fourth at 5,100 rpms. This gets me 14.96 at 91 mph. I also have a CC 4x2, 5 speed, 3.92's LSD, adjusted to 4.13's with the size tires I have (295/50-16's). I tried winding it up to 6,000 rpms in every gear, but I ran nearly 4 tenths slower that way. I took 2 trophies this year at PMI Drag Strip in Pueblo, Co in the Street Tire Division. One for 2nd and One for 1st the last Friday night of the season.
And you can see in this Picture how wide the rear tires are.
Later, and Good luck.

Message: hey "fastdak" is your truck a 4x4 or a 4x2?
Also how do you guy surgest i should launch, being that i have the one wheel peal going for me.
Also i noticed that when i shifted into second (pretty Hard) that the wheels would literly hop for a bit, and you could feel the truck drift. I think that if i ease up on that shift so its just a quick chirp it will better my time, what do you think.
Also what cheap mods are out their that wont void the 7/70 warentty that i have for the powertrain. I dont feel like voiding that 2 months after i got the truck

Message: sorry, my bad. it's 2x4. as for leaving the line, try to launch as hard as you can without spinning the tires too much. a set of traction bars wouldn't hurt either. lakewood sells them real cheap. under $ 80 bucks.
