Message: I have a '02 Dakota R/T. It's running really rough. RPM's are dropping to 400 and it comes back up to 700 and it's erratic. Black smoke, terrible gas mileage (even for an R/T). My MIL (check engine light) is on. It's in the dealership right now waiting to be fixed.
There is a way you can check what the problem is. Turn your vehicle to on position, off, on, off, on. (Turn it on 3 times.) You aren't actually starting the vehicle either. Where your odometer is it will display a code or several codes. Such as, P300 for example. Once you get that code you can look it up on google.com to find out what is wrong. There is also a post somewhere on this forum that has all the codes listed as well.
However, the codes aren't the say all for what's wrong, but it's a great place to start. Let us know what you find out.

Message: I have a 99 CC R/T too and my "check engine" light came on and wouldnt go off too. Also, my "brake" and "abs" lights came on along with the check engine light. I took it to the dealer and they said the sensors went bad, so they put new sensors in for free (under extended warranty). Get it checked to see if its the sensors

Message: thanks Eli, but the "on;off;on;off" odometer test does not work on 98 & 99 models....I figured that is was prolley one of my sensors and the computer was just retarding the engine to try and compensate itself....I will just take it to autozone.
