Subject: Kenne Bell S/C concerns
IP: Logged

Message:
Close to having the pennies scraped for a KB S/C for my O3 4.7 QC, manual tranny, 4WD. However, I have been told that this mod on a manual 4WD is not a good idea, that the driveline won't hold up, and that the power increase is impractical for a 4WD daily driver. Any inputs? I'd hate like hell to spend the time and money for this and have a truck that either starts to fall apart or I have to nurse to keep from lighting tires and roasting hard parts. Can someone give me straight poop?

A lot of people talk about KB's having too much torque because of full boost being available at 2000 rpms. But just because it is available doesn't mean you have to use it. The boost is controllable. I don't have 4WD, but there was someone on this board sometime back that did with the KB and he never mentioned any driveling problems. Since you have a manual transmission, maybe you should research the Paxton. They have a nice kit too. Just research thoroughly before you decide.

That's true. The boost is controlled by throttle position. Just lean into the throttle and you should have no problems. I have the Kenne Bell, 2wd. This is a very nice kit!!!! Fully complete, no other mods needed!!! Go for the 6psi kit if your worried.

Thanx for the input - kinda what I thought, but needed to hear it firsthand.

J - how did you solve the pinging/detonation problem with your KB? Ever pinpoint the cause?

Dyno shop said it was running lean under boost at 3/4 and full throttle. Kenne bell says it isn't running lean. Got a couple of 48lb aux injectors I will put in over the weekend. If that doesn't work, I'll send the pcm back to KB to have a few degrees of timing taken out.

I didn't know that you could have them calibrate it for a particular octane. My manual said 92 min, but the highest I can get in california is 91.

Mine is also for 92. I'm lucky i guess cuz i can get 94 up here in Canada. I think they just take a little more timing out if you want it rated for 91. Which is what you said yuo were going to get them to do.
I'd take your weather and 91 over mine and 94!!!! Hehe.... I was just down in South Carolina for the Darlington race..... that is some sweet ass weather!!!!!!! I live in Southern Ontario so we do get hot summers but the winters are friggin freezing!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you running the 6 lb kit, or did you go with 8?

I think once you get a S/C you're going to have the urge to kick that pig rather than baby it so I hope these parts hold up!

I have the 03 4.7 4X4 with auto. I do plan on installing a S/C in a year or so. Any known problems with that combo?

I feeel like a complete idiot but i'm not sure. I told the guy at the performance shop to order me the 8pse. When i picked the truck up I assumed it was the 8lb. I dynoed it at 265 horse and 317 torque. I'm automatic. I think those are six psi numbers aren't they????? I asked the guy at the shop and he said "i think i remembered to tell them 8psi". BUt i got the feeling he wasn't exactly positive. Nice shop eh.... Any one know how i can tell??? What's the Diameter for the different size pulleys???? I guesss i could call Kenne Bell and wait 2 hours on the phone.....

You could get a boost gage, but those sound like 6 psi numbers to me. I know what you mean about the 2 hours on the phone with KB, their tech support is no good at all.

ScottE....Go to Jeepsunlimited.com, the speed
freaks forum. Look up W.J. Wheezer. He has
had a K/B s/c on his 4x4, 4.7L jeep for over 2
years. You can read about all the mods he
has put on and taken off. Now the jeep runs
perfect and gets scratch with all 4 tires. It took
him alot to figure it out (with no help from K/B).
Anyway it's very informative.

I had the KB on my 2000 4x4 4.7 5sp for about 2 years before I sold the unit to someone who found out about it on this forum. I never had any problems at all with it and I miss it to this day, but the price was right at a time when I needed the money sooo.... I've had it under full boost in 4WD in about 8" of snow and had a blast! No problem. I've also towed a horse trailer loaded down a few times and didn't get into full WOT boost, but fairly heavy throttle putting 3-4 lbs of boost and had no problems. The blower has been off for almost a year, and I haven't seen any ill effects rise up from running a blower hard for two years either. I saw boost just about everyday I had it on the road. I would be driving around sometimes by myself with no-one else around me on the road and just get an itch and floor it just to get my daily fix of boost. ScottE go for it, you will love it! Did I mention I still miss mine? :(

After speaking w/Ken Bell about installing a S/C on my '99 Dakota 5.2 w/4spd auto,I was told the trans. is a weak link. They don't make a KIT for my truck! Any info (options) appreciated.

I just test drove a 2000 4WD QC SLT w/5.9 liter and KB SC. I was doing the test for my son-in-law who is several hours away.
I was UNDER IMPRESSED, I mean I felt nothing. Since I don't own it yet, I hadn't read the manual for the SC. Is there maybe some ON/OFF switch on a KB SC?
I'd think a 360 V8 in a DAKOTA should go good without a supercharger. But this Dodge just had average acceleration. Anybody got an idea?

There is a little screwq that you can adjust to turn the boost off. They probably have it off. If that's not it than stay away. I'm telling you if you can't feel a difference or notice the thing is fast than something is wrong!!!!!!!!!!! There is also a wiring harness you can put on for limp mode. This is for if something happens to the charger and you got to get home. Also when you start the truck check the Knock Sensor in the cab. The lights should go from red (far right) down to green (far left) and then go off. Make sure you watch it right when you start the truck because it does this really fast. Did you jpop the hood and make sure there is actually a charger under there???? Check to see if they have the belt on the thing!!!! This ones a long shot but i'm tellin ya..... you should definitally notice a difference!!!!!!!

Just an FYI. A local shop (friend is the owner) put a KB on a 360 Durango. Power gain was less than 65 hp due to them have to reduce the timing to avoid knock. They were forced to install a water injection kit (about $400.00) so timing could be advanaced to make some supercharger HP - they were then able to make close to 100hp. Don't expect much more. I believe that was with 8 lb boost.
