Hey Guys,

I need some info, I've seen some posts on the subjet but i'm not sure if its the same thing. I get some knocking at 80km, When trying to accelerate past that speed. Once the tranny shifts and the engine is at a high rpm it stops. Would this be the plenum gasket problem to. I've notice a loss of power too.

I have 97 5.2 Auto 4x4 and when mine was bad I never really noticed any knocking but perhaps some pinging. It did use alot of oil. About a Qt. every 5-600 miles. There was loss of power. When I removed intake the plenum gasket was blown in three different places. That was about 5000 miles ago and hasn't used a drop of oil since. When I replaced it I used the gasket that has metal in the center and started using Mobil 1 synthetic oil. I bought the truck used with 62,000 miles on it and gasket was blown when I bought it. Probably why they traded it in cause truck is perfect now.

Thanks for the reply ROB 1. I was wondering if you know the name of the gasket and part number and if its a big job to change myself. I'm using Mobil 1 synthetic also. I'am losing some oil too.
The noise i'm hearing is pinging.

Thanks

Sorry. The guy I bought the truck from paid for gaskets so I gave him the reciept but I purchased it from Federated Auto Parts and I think it was Fel Pro. Just make sure it has metal reinforcement in center of it.

It is not to bad to replace if you are use to doing that type of work. Worst part is removing ac compressor and stuff out of way. You don't have to diconnect lines just move compressor out of way. Remove all injector wires, sensor wires etc and intake and be sure to clean all your gasket surfaces real well before replacing. Be sure not to over torque bolts. Some guys suggest you use new bolts in manifold and plenum but I re-used old ones with out a problem. Probably take you about 4hrs or so.

If you do a search on here or dodgetalk.com you probably can find alot better instructions for it is a common problem with the 5.2 & 5.9 engines.

If you have the cash and want to you can do away with the plenum altogether by installing the M1 intake for around 3-400.00.
