Message: I hear a lot of R/T owners saying they don't want to buy performance, they want to build it. But you know damn well that if the R/T came with a supercharged 4.7 all R/T guys would of been all over it. I say 4.7 because Kenne Bell's supercharger looks like a factory set up on the 4.7 compared to the 5.9 kit which looks after market. You only say you don't want it from the factory because you can't get it from the factory.

Message: I can think of lots of reasons why I bought the Dakota R/T over the Lighting.
Main reason was SPACE. The L is a single cab truck. Why the f_uck cant they extend the cab?
Im 6' and I feel claustrophobic in those trucks.
Looks. The f_ucking F150 is 8ft tall. Unacceptable.
Finally..its a Ford. Didnt feel like giving another $1500 to my local transmission guy because Ford cuts costs by putting toy tranmissions in Light and HD trucks.
A supercharger will level the field. Then what?

Message: It kills me how Lightning lovers always talk smack about Dakota R/Ts. Lightnings (factory supercharged) are only a second or two quicker than R/Ts (naturally aspirated). Put a supercharger on an R/T, and it will smoke the Lightning like a cheap cigar. Regardless, both are TRUCKS. Trucks are designed to haul things, specifically things that can't fit into a car, and to carry heavy loads... not to be speed machines. Yes, Lightings may be faster than some R/Ts, but the R/Ts can carry more, tow more, have more interior room, are solidly built, and are as reliable as they come. The Lightning's engine is under constant stress, and its components are cheap. The R/T's engine runs under much lower pressure, and is solidly built (iron block, iron heads, etc., and a proven design).
Trucks seem to resemble their owners; Dakota owners work hard, play hard, and are reliable. Lightning owners, much like their supercharged trucks, whine constantly, and while they can put on a good show, are useful for little else.

ONLY 1 or two seconds LMAO....
anyways.. easy as just "throwing" a supercharger on huh. ya, ive never seen supercharged r/t's running mid 14's...(rolls eyes - ive seen TONS) lol, a stupercharger, and STILL a FULL second SLOWER! unless youve got the cash to just about completely revamp the tired overused over rated 360, youre not gonna get much out of it. reliable trucks! HA... tranny problems, pinging problems, the infamous cab pop.. severe lack of horsepower so great, a stock r/t will get taken out cold by most decent ricers on the freeway. r/t's solidly built? yet another LMAO!.. ive never seen a year old truck RUST more than the dakota (yet another common problem).. just imagine what theyre gonna look like in 10 years, probably like a rusted out el camino/malibu. all that, AND r/t badges on anything that dodge feels is a bad seller. "hey lets put some rims, and a few minor power mods on it and call it an r/t... theyll move like hotcakes"... well mr. dialmer/chrysler.. youre not fooling anyone.
i do agree the r/t is a good base to start from... but thats usually thought up by people that are dissapointed in the r/t to begin with. in fact i used to say it myself for that reason. honestly now... who buys a vehicle for a "good base".. i mean, i dont know many people with the kind of money to throw around that go out and spend 20-25 THOUSAND dollars just "for a good base"
sorry for ranting people... but for years ive floated around r/t forums, the same points brought up, and the same usless arguements debated. its tiring.. people should just accept the lightning is a better truck, all around, and quit whining because theres a truck out there that will beat it in almost every way. then the argument about payload, towing, interior room comes up... you guys DO know the new harley edition is pretty much a lightning in a different body.... and imo looks pretty cool.
i do like the that the dakota cant be confused with anything else on the road, like isuzus as s-10s and mazdas as rangers. i like the lines of my r/t.. i like driving it, when its not squeeking, pinging, popping, or making some other kind of disgusting noise. i HATE the turning radius.. feels like driving a limo.
aside from that, sorry for the rant, long day at work. let the flames begin

Message: I looked at both the R/T and the lightning before I bought the R/T. My main reason was the Club Cab option, I hate standard cabs. Also, the Lightning is a full size truck, it goes really fast straight but its still an F-150. I dont want a big ass truck, I like the size of the R/T. The other reason is the money difference. With the R/T I can afford to play around with the looks and the performance of my truck without having to wait until I have it paid for before I can afford to do anything to it. The lightning is the perfect vehicle for people with no imagination and too much money.

Message: Simple perspective: If money was not an option.... R/T or Lightning?
Any realistic person is going to say Lightning. It is a faster truck that outperforms the R/T in every way. You may prefer the looks of the R/T over the Lightning, but there is no way you can prefer your performance. It is simply not arguable.
"Slap a supercharger and this and that and I will smoke a lightning" blah blah blah. Put a pulley and chip on a Lightning and no, I don't believe you will smoke him.
Every arguement FOR the R/T I hve ever seen is worthless. The only valid arguement is that you prefer the looks. That is it. You can say price was an issue, but don't say that you are spending the money you saved on mods for your R/T. No way, you would've bought a Lightning if you had the dough.
We all know how much both cost and how both perform. So what is left to argue? Nothing. Lightning outperforms RTs, but cost more. Period.

Message: Durango,
"You can say price was an issue, but don't say that you are spending the money you saved on mods for your R/T. No way, you would've bought a Lightning if you had the dough." Dumb!
True motorheads don't decide on one vehicle over the other just because it is out of the box faster. I had the dough, but I didn't buy the L because I think it's too tall and bubble looking. My buddy(had the cash) didn't buy a new stang because it's faster than the '94 he purchased(for the time being). Yes, my buddy and I purchased our vehicles because we like the way they look. Performance can be added whenever to whatever vehicle, it only takes a little time and money.
Really, who purchases a vehicle that is hideous(in there opinion) but fast? If this was true, I would have purchase a z28(ugly to me but fun, fast & affordable).
With the money I have saved on purchasing a used R/T instead of a new truck(won't use the L scenario because I would never purchase one), I've purchase a few key items for my truck. My truck now runs low 9s in the 1/8 without a supercharger or nx. I've seen Ls run low 9s and high 8s at the same and different 1/8 mile tracks. A L is just another vehicle at the track, except that most of the owners like the work done by the factory instead of getting there hands dirty!

Message: Well spoken pete!!! Another person that agrees with me!
I get sick of people saying that they would rather drive their R/T over a Lightning anyday! Me? I'd much rather prefer a Lightning over an R/T anyday. Lightnings aren't cheap though. They tend to cost around $30k brand new. If I found a modded out R/T thats brand new for $30k, then I would just get the R/T because its faster and worth more. Brand new R/T's go for $27k-$29k! Thats only $2000 cheaper!
And whats this about having no problems with your Dakota??? What's that? I have had about $3k worth of problems with my R/T. Now I know why my extended warranty was RECOMMENDED. It should be a MUST, not recommended. Glad I bought that!
And the towing?? Who gives a $hit! I cannot find any R/T owners that plan on towing a damn house. Who cares which has more towing. My brother towed our Mastercraft boat to Tennessee (I Live in Indiana) and didn't have to worry about his towing capacity. The only thing I plan on towing is a damn boat or Sea Doo.
By the looks of it...I would much rather prefer a Lightning over an R/T. My brother has owned his Lightning for over 2 years and still has had now problems. I have had my R/T for less than a year and have ran into many!! The only reason that I didn't buy a Lightning like my brother's is because my R/T was $13,000 cheaper than his. If I would've had the money, I would've got the Lightning

But lets face it, Durango is right, a lightning owner can do mods as well and smoke your r/t anyways. So why dont we just accept that fact, and say that the lightning will seem a whole lot slower when the ram srt10 starts to produce itself on the streets.
A Dakota is hands down the fastest mid-size pickup made. Thats fine with me. I enjoy that fact because if there is one thing i hate more than a ford its deffinately chev trucks. And neither company can compete with the junk they throw in our class.
