Subject: Annoying FlowMaster 40 IP: Logged
Message: Hey folks,
I recently put on a Flowmaster 40 Series muffler on my 4.7 CC. It sounds really good at idle and all the way up through 1800 RPM, but as soon as I hit 1900-2200 RPM, it vibrates (resonates) like crazy. It gets really annoying.
The setup I have is the stock cat and pipe until the bed starts, then I have the FM and then about 18" of 2.5" pipe with a 45 degree turndown tip, just infront of the rear axle. It only seems to do this in that RPM range and it gives me a wicked headache driving at 100Km/H for an hour.
Any suggestions? Longer 'tailpipe' have it exit outside of the truck instead of under the bed? I need to get this taken care of.
Thanks.

Message: topless_68 - I did the exact thing you did but in reverse. I've got an '01 4.7 w/40series single in dual out, and used to run duals out the back till I got a roll pan. Now I have them dumped straight down from the muffler.
If you run the pipes longer,,out the back for instance it will be quieter,,and not drone nearly as bad.
I prefer to have it dumped,,and yes it drones very much (especially around 2k) ,,but I like it/live w/it.
My next muffler w/be a Magnaflow. My friend has the exact same setup as me, except muffler. His is much quiter,,,got good rumble + life time warranty.

Message: I've happily used Flowmasters for years. 50 series (16" long) are somewhat quieter, but the 70 series (22") has a similar sound out the back, but almost no floorboard noise. Too bad all these muffler shops only want to sell what's on the shelf and not what the customer needs or wants.

Message: No shiite! Any of the cars at the track that actually run a muffler at all, usually run a Flowmaster over anything else!!!
You just need to fine tune things to be happy with it. Just don't say it sucks because you didn't install it correctly or buy what you needed (for sound).
The same thing happens with people using Holley carbs without KNOWING how to set them up. They take more skill to set up correctly than just bolting onto your car (power valve, acc pump, etc) If it doesn't work out-of-the-box they go to Edlebrock which kind of does and then talk crap about Holley.
Any true drag racer uses Holley over Edlebrock any frigging day of the week. But the morons on the street think Edlebrock is better. Dumbasses!

Message: I agree that the shop will sell you what they have on the shelf and not what the customer wants. I see more flowmasters on true dragsters as well and that's what i got too, couldn't be happier.
The first time I had the muffler put on the guy did such a sh*tty job I made him cut it off then and there and drove home with no pipes, till I could take it somewhere where they did a pro job, good bends, good welds and no welders putty slapped on to hide crap.

Message: before i got the flowmaster my 4.7 cc could chirp 3rd gear every time. after flowmaster never could.also best gtech run with flowmaster was 7.5. went to dynomax only other muffler shop had. now gets 3rd some times best gtech run 6.9. thinking about going from 2.5 inch tail pipes to 2.25. 4.7 seems to like some back pressure. flow master did sound good except wen shifting 5 speed manual. muffler was installed correctly. same shop did both.

Message: face it y'all flowmasters suck! I can't tell you how many dyno results prove it. litlpunisher...duh, over course you will gain power with going to true duals, especially on a 340, but the point you seem to be missing is that utilizing a better qulaity muffler then flowmaster probably would have gained you more horsepower then what you got. Just suck up you're pride and realize that slowmasters suck
