Three BIG performance improvers:
(1) Flometrics 48mm Billet Throttle Body
(2) JBA Headers
(3) QuickD Intake Tube
Those three will really wake up your V6.

Message: I'm a newbee to this website. Very nice. I just purchased a 2001 Quad Cab, V6, 5 speed. I hoping to make some minor mods (w/ the wife's permission). I already dropped in a K&N filter and I was hoping in the future to switch to the Gen II. K&N doesn't list the a Gen II for a 2000/2001 V6. What mods would I have to do if I have cruise control? Any recommendations on exhaust? If I just replace the muffler to a Dynomax/flowmater/gibson, what is the overall dimension, in & out of the muffler. I would like the rumble to be just above stock. Would I be better off with a catback system? It seems ashame to lose the stock stainless steel tailpipe. Thanks in advance.

Message: I'm not sure about the 2001 V6's, but the Gen-II system does work on the 1997 - 2000 V6's. You'll have to check your cruise control linkage though.
On the muffler/exhaust, a single 2.5" IN /2.5" OUT works with the factory 2.5" pipes and also gives you better overall performance. The cat-back systems have only one advantage over the stock pipes...the stock pipes have crimped bends and the aftermarket kits are mandrel bent (much smoother). But, the stock pipes will work fine.

Message: I have a 3.9 98 dodge dakota sport with the 17" R/T rims. I put a flowpro made by flowmaster with a turndown. It gave me a 20-25 horses. I highly recommend it. Also what I did to improve my air intake is I made an air box cut out (I do not recommend this if your truck is still under warranty). It raised my rpm's up and gave me the extra take of I looked for.

Phillip, what did you use to get the 20HP figure? I've dyno'd a few exhaust systems and they're all right around the 10-15HP max.

Message: Either one works well. The main difference is that the airaid uses the stock, accordian, intake tube which does create turbulence in teh air flow to the TB. Not a big problem with slightly modofied street engines.

Message: A turn down is a very very short exhaust pipe that is "turned down". Basically it is turned to face the ground. Makes it very loud ;)

Message: Haven't tried it personally, but after reading how they do it, TPS and MAP can be adjusted as they claim...but only to a point and with sacrafices to the fuel economy.
"Loss of gas mileage to be expected is 1-3 miles per gallon in fuel economy." - Venom
We're getting approximately 8-10% increases in HP with increases in MPG with just a $35 IAT Adjuster. Add a modified TB (Fastman) and you've got the same increases as the Venom...with an increase in MPG as well. (For less than a Venom400...$345 at Summit Racing.)
I'd be cautious...but am curious about the Venom400.
(That's my opinion...they may vary on the list.) ;)

Message: I have been reading this website for only 1 week or so & am happy to have found guys who know Dakotas. My 95 Dakota Sport is 3.9 v6, 5 spd stick, ext cab that is bone stock with 105,000 miles. Is there anything I can do to improve performance & fuel economy both? Also do I start with the intake & ignition, or the exhaust? Where would I get the biggest gain in power? Will a 180 degree t-stat really help? I am not going to make a race truck (wish I could) of it, just hopefully the everyday sleeper. Thanks, Steve. dakota95

Message: Hi Guys.
I have a 3.9L manual 2001 Single cab. I put an air raid on it and I like it. The next thing I was thinking about doing was putting in a computer chip, but i heard that those not worth it, and its better to put a high flow fuel pump and an ECU override ( no clue what this is ). What are your opinions. Oh and can you put Nitrous on a Manual and do something to not have the engine redline and blow up?

Message: JBA makes the only headers for the 3.9. Look at speedtweaks.net. Personally, I saw a lot more improvement from my new TB than I did from my headers. Looking back, I would have saved myself the cash for something else. On my butt-dyno, I could just barely tell the difference.
Either way, they look cool under the hood, and it easier to change the plugs with the headers rather than the stock manifolds.
