Subject: Mixing Octane Grades ???
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a question that may be simple but I am not so sure. My new dodge truck takes Mid grade 89 octane gas according to my owners manual. However in my area many stations charge the same for mid grade and premium, about 1.58/gal. What I want to do is mix reg (87) with premium (93) to get a mid grade of 89-90. Normally I wouldnt worry about a few pennies but the difference between reg and mid grade is 22 cents/gal and my truck takes 36 gallons. Will mixing two grades give you a mid grade or is there something I am missing?

18 gals of 87 + 18 gals of 93 will give you 36 gals of 90 octane.

I usually limit my discussions to oils, gear lubes, filtration, etc., but since my brother in law owns a few service stations (and I can speak from experience) I will answer your "octane" question:

d_man,

Mix away to your hearts content!

Most gas pumps these days are "blend pumps" when it comes to mid-grade (plus) gas. All they do is blend Super & Regular to get "Plus". Equal parts 87 octane & 93 octane should produce a good 90 octane mix, and it will not hurt a thing.

How to tell if a pump is a blend pump? If a gas pump has only one hose, & offers 3 grades, then it is a blend pump.
