Subject: 8 1/4 diff IP: Logged
Message: Hey I'm thinking its about time to put a locker in my dak because traction is becoming a problem. I've got 235/65-70/15 tires (not sure of the aspect ratio) they're radial T/As so they should grab pretty well but this one wheel wonder thing isn't cutting it for me.
What are the options for lockers in a '95 dak with an open 8.25 differential? I've got 3.55's in there right now and am wondering if I should step it up to 3.92 while i'm in there.
the wear pattern is still pretty good, but if I put new gears in there how do I adjust the side shims. one of my co-workers said you needed mopar's tool to go through the axle shaft and adjust it that way. there has to be some other way to do it.
Any suggestions?

Message: I have a 93 Dak with the 8 1/4 rear also. I blew mine into pieces racing it as a one legger. I put 3.91 gears and a spicer limited slip differential in it and have not broke it again since. I have 275/60r15 BFG Radial T/A's on the back and have great traction as long i dont use nitrous (but thats another story). I did the rear myself by using a long pipe and welding a large nut to one end that fits the side cap adjusters and welded a 1/2 drive socket to the other end to use the torque wrench on to tighten the adjusters. If you have any questions you can e-mail me at dakracer2003@netscape.net I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Message: For what its worth, I chose the powertrax limited slip unit because I wasn't changing gear ratios. It was easy to install(remove spider gears) and acts a lot like a ratcheting locker. It was noisy at first but settled down with use. I have had it 2 years now without any problems.

Message: I just put in the trac-lok and 4.10 gears in mine, and I love it. Don't know why they just don't come that way. oh yeah gears are OEM.

Message: what did each of those lockers cost you? and how did changing to the 4.10's effect your gas milage? right now mine isn't too bad, well actually pretty good about 14.8 in town.
all I have seen for my dak is the powertrax no-slips but I haven't read much about them and I was hoping to be able to get away with something under $400 being a college student that is alot of money
Thanks again
