Subject: Which Flowmaster? IP: Logged
Message: In about a month, my '01 4.7 black 4X4 Dakota club cab will be delivered ... I'd like to put on a Flowmaster, but I've seen many varieties (i.e. 40 series, 50 series, deltaflow, etc). I want the traditional loud, deep sound, and of course the extra power , but I will be driving back and forth between California and New Hampshire a couple times during the next few years, so I don't want it to be annoyingly loud inside the cab on the open road. Which to choose?

Message: I have the 40 series two-chamber with 3" cat-back pipes and it sounds sweet. This is the loudest flowmaster you can get and it has a nice deep roar to it with very little noise at highway speeds. I originally put on a gibson but they are not very much louder or deeper than the factory. Just make sure you get pipes all the way back and not just use a turndown after the muffler or it will be too loud.

Message: Look at Flo-Pro Performance Mufflers, they are great sounding and very quiet (relative to my old Flowmaster 40 series) at highway speed.

Message: I have a single in dual out Flowmaster 50 series Delta flow and I know a guy who has a 40 series delta flow on a truck the same as mine. Both have the same volume but just slightly different tones. Go with the Delta flow, it reduces the in cab harmonic resonance. Performance between the 40 and 50 series is the same according to Flowmaster and we have not seen any difference in the two. Only a slightly different tone.

Message: the 40 series dual chamber isn't the loudest.. they make a single chamber 30(?) series in summit.. it is for racing. My old roomie had them on his Chebby.. they were loud.. I think I might get one for my next ride. =]
I had a 50 series on my old truck.. my muffler was just as loud.. it was very quiet. You could only hear it at idle. Go 40 series.. don't worry about cab resonance. I have 40 series dual out on my truck and 2 delta flow 40's on the Stang... and I can tell you this, there IS resonance on the stang, but NONE on the truck.

Message: Go with a 4 chamber. I have a 4 Chamber on a quadcab and I have plenty on resonance. I asked for a 3 chamber, but my installer said that my quadcab will resonate more like a full SUV or a car. Any experienced exhaust shop owner listens to the customer very closely when they show up for flowmasters. If the customers has ANY reservation about "living with noise" they won't recommend 3 chamber flows. They'll steer the customer to 4 chamber or some other "more gentle" free flowing muffler. I had 3-chambers on my vette, and they resonated; that's OK for that type of car. I strongly encourage you to carefully consider living with 3 Chamber Flows, especially since you are doing long duty in the vehicle. Go with the 4 chamber product.

Message: 1) In this four-chamber business, which flowmasters are available?
2) Does the cat-back system offer a whole lot more in performance? Is it worth the extra cash?
3) What are the sound / performance differences between the single in/single out and single in/dual out?
Thanks for all the help!

Message: 4 chamber? Flowmaster only makes 2 and 3 chamber, then a 1 chamber race muffler
don't worry about resonance.. it is very hard to notice in our trucks... Now in my Stang, it is HIGHLY noticeable and annoying. I was very surprised.
I doubt differences in pipe/ outlets/ etc are going to be noticeable. I have a dual out with 2.25" pipe. Works fine for me. ON the Stang, I just had some welded in place.

Message: I'm running a 40 delta flow on an '01 QC 4.7L 4x4. Good deep idle sound, moderate resonance 1600 to 1900 RPM under load (O/D L/U). Once its over 2000 at speed the resonance is gone. I'm happy with it. Hope this helps.

Message: No not flowmaster.......definately run magnaflow if your looking for performance and lifetime warranty, I had a flowmaster on my Grand Cherokee, in two years I blew the end seal. Very dissappointed. Then I found magnaflow, direct competetor to Borla, but better design, check out the web site you'll be satisfied with the performance and tone, although a bit quieter than flowmasters. www,magnaflow.com

Message: I called the Magnaflow tech line, they were clueless as to what HP/TQ gains I would see on my 4.7...just ordered a Flowmaster SUV Performance 50 Series single in, dual 2.25 inch out from Summit for $79.
Anyone hear the rumors that Borla just packs a cherry bomb type muffler in a expensive casing?
(anyone take apart a Borla muffler?)
Anyhow, with these mufflers, it really comes down to sound (well, maybe price too)...IMHO, the gains, flow, performance, etc, are all pretty close.

Message: There are really only two types of mufflers; glass packs and turbo mufflers. Borla is a glass packed mufflerand so is a cherry bomb. Flowmaster is a turbo muffler. Turbo mufflers use chambers where as glass packed mufflers are packed with fiberglass. That does not mean that a Borla and a cherrybomb are the same muffler. They are still two different designs.
Flowmaster mufflers:
30 series = quieter than 50 series
40 series = 2 chamber "the original"
50 series = 3 chamber - quieter than 50 series
70 series = the quietest flowmaster
Delta Flow = adds 3 deflectors & quiets interior resonance
I am running a Flowmaster single 3" 50 series Cat Back on my 2001 4.7. It sounds excellent but is a little quiet. It is not Delta Flow and I can barely hear it inside my truck. You will get better performance from a cat back mainly because of the 3" pipe and the mandrel bends.

Message: Is the cat-back kit that you used for a CC? I can't seem to find any cat backs for a QC, but I know that the QC and the CC have the same wheelbase. I was thinking about getting a flowmaster catback for my '00. Also, the other thing was that Summit lists the 5.2/5.9 for the catback, does it also fit a 4.7 or do I need to find a different part # for the 4.7 catback?
Thanks,

Message: Re: Flowmaster and dual catback, they don't offer a dual cat back system, so Summit wouldn't have a Flowmaster dual catback for a 4.7 QC. (I didn't ask about single cat back)
JC Whitney offers a split-rear cat back system with 16-gauge steel, mandrel-bent, but the pipes are 2.5 inches...common thought is this robs low-end torque on the 4.7...with a aluminized performance muffler, hangers, clamps, etc, it goes for $174.95, part # 07TU6184R for 97-00 DAKs with extended cab, short bed...question is, does the ext cab also mean QC?
CyberWolf, here is something for thought:
Per Flowmaster tech line, their SUV Performance 50 Series is quieter than their Delta Flow 50 as Flowmaster says the casing is thicker, they also say since the casing is bigger, it also flows better for more HP/TQ gains...I bit on their advertising shmooze and went with the SUV Performance 50 Series.
I got the dual 2.25 outlets, I know a single 3 inch system would probably flow better, but I just want to see those dual 3 inch chrome tips sticking out from my rear bumper...should still got some low-end torque gain over stock with this set up (desire more umph from stop light launches than pickup when flooring it at highway speeds)
BTW, the flowmaster part number for their SUV Performance 50 Series single 2.5 inch inlet with dual 2.25 inch outlets is 525552, again, $79 at Summit for the muffler plus $6.75 shipping...a hot steaming deal! (though their JET CHIP Stage II costs $21 more -vs- truckperformance.com)

Message: The single out verses the dual out is fairly simple. They are pretty much equal. The single you want a 3 inch pipe going out. On the duals you want smaller 2 1/5 to 2 1/4 inches. The smaller size of the duals equals out to the larger size of the sinlge. If you run 3 inch pipes out on the duals you would loose some power.

Message: Guys go with Part number FLO-17278 from Summitt. Its a 3 inch mandrel bent cat back with a piece for the regular cab and another extension for the quad cab, on my 2001 4.7 I had to end up using both? but anyways it includes a 50 series delta flow and sounds nice.

Message: Just so you guys know. the 30 series is a 1 chamber racing muffler. i had a dakota and got the 40 series, sounded great. the 30 series is more for sports cars (ie my 02 stang gt) the 30 series is the smallest, loudest and yields the best gain in HP and torque. Ill have before and after dyno results for the 30 series and 40 series when i get a day off.
