Subject: intake insulation??? IP: Logged
Message: whats up guys, i just bought a quick d intake for my 01 dakota r/t cuz i like the setup and ive heard good things about it but i have a question. the intake pipe is 3 inch metal piping and i know its gonna get damn hot under the hood, affecting the temperature of the air entering the engine, what can i use to insulate that piece and cool down the air charge. any info is greatly appreciated.

Message: Ceramic Coating inside and out is the only thing I can think of to cool the intake tube itself.

Message: summit racing sells a kit that is made by DEI, it's an insulation wrap that is designed for intakes, it has a reflective coating on the outside and insulation on the inside, try this link : http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=DEI%2D010417

Message: According to the specs on their website, www.designengineering.com the intake cover kit will reduce the temp of the incoming air by 30% so if that's true than I guess it works, I met a guy one night at a dakota meet we had who used a type of wrap on his intake and he mounted the outside temp sensor ( from the overhead temp. gauge) in his air intake so he could monitor the incoming air temps, he said after insulating the intake he sees a drop in the air temp. The kit goes for $50 but it should help, it can't hurt

Message: silver01r/t,, the cold air tube on my truck is also steel and would get really hot, i used header rap on the tube and noticed a big differance, alot better throttle responce, gas mileage increase and just over all a noticable power increase. it was well worth the 50 bucks or so..

Message: thanks guys, i appreciate the info. now i have some ideas on how to go about taking care of this little problem. i cant wait for the system to get here so i can take the truck out for a spin when the install is done, the system has a 9" k&n filter on it so im expecting some decent gains and the insulation will only help.
