Message: You won't notice very much difference going from 3.90 to 4.10. The next logical step would be to go to 4.56.

Message: is your truck for daily driving and is it an auto or 5 speed?...4.56 is kinda pushing it for daily driving with an auto tranny...

Message: b1llyw is right, the change from 3.90 (actually 3.91) to 4.10 (actually 4.11)is pretty subtle. Final drive gear ratio is a direct torque multiplier, so that change would only give you the equivalent of a 5% increase in torque (it's about a 5% change in gear ratio) while the 4.56 gears would give you about a 15% change in gearing which equates to a 15% increase in engine torque. Since 4.11 gears and 4.56 gears aren't usually very different in cost, the low end performance gain per dollar is WAY better with 4.56. There will be a more noticable decrease in gas mileage and an increase in highway engine RPM with the 4.56 but really not that radically (noticeably less than shifting out of OD) so it's not that big a deal unless you run fast on the highway a lot. There is no greater gain in aceleration at normal speeds per dollar than significantly regearing. Do keep in mind that if you thrash your truck really hard, the 4.56 gears will be somewhat easier to break, as the small diameter of the pinion gear makes it weaker, this is much of the reason why offroaders use huge diffs to allow really low gears while still keeping them rugged.

Message: Stick with 3.90 if its a daily driver. If you're off-roading or racing more than you cruize it, throw in 4.56

Message: Well if mileage and top speed are not a concern you should see a nice improvement going from 3.92 to 4.56 eh

Message: Top speed isn't an issue at all unless you have disabled the governor, you'll just get to the governor way quicker. Gas mileage will go down but not all that much. You will get more engine noise due to the higher revs, but also not that much. If I remember correctly the gearing change in overdrive is between 25% - 30%, so the change to 4.56 is about half of shifting out of overdive at highway speeds (remember it's a fairly new thing to have overdrive at all in an auto) but the acceleration gain is like a 50 lb/ft gain in torque at almost any speed, you can't get that anywhere else for the money, especially in an R/T where you only have to regear one axle!

Message: thanks guys for your input but what would happen with that higher gear if you run fast on the highway? would you step dow to the 4.10 just to be safe?

Message: like he said in the first reply, going to a 410 isnto going to be much different, if you run 456 you will have a higher rpm at all speeds. What do you want here? acceleration or top speed? Ive got some 191s that make you run the flats like theres no tomorrow
