Message: The widest you can safely go on the 17x9 inch R/T wheels is a 275-width tire. The only problem is that in order to keep your speedo/odo relatively accurate, you would need to run 275/50/17s, and there aren't many tires available in that size. The overall diameter of the tire is the most important when considering size; try to keep the new tire within .3" of the original, no more than .5" difference max, because any more than that will really start to mess with your calibration.
As far as recommending tires, it all depends on your budget, what kind of climate you live in, etc. You would probably want a tire with a softer rubber compound, to give better grip (as opposed to a harder rubber compound with less grip and a longer tread life). Go with what you feel comfortable with.

Message: I have a set of 275/55/17 Pirelli Scorpion Zero's that I just bought and put on. I paid $147 each for them on tirerack.com. I have about 400 miles on them and would like to get rid of them. My 318 can't really handle this much tire. I will sell them for $115 ea or best offer. Let me know if you are interested...

Message: I put Nitto 275/50/17's on my R/T rims and I am very happy with them. Stick like glue on dry, and are good in the rain. Same gearing/speedo readings as stock tires. No clearance problems either. They were $138 deliverd from discounttiredirect.com

Message: I put 315/35/17 Nitto 555R Drag Radials on the rear of mine with the stock rims. I don't know why people say it can't be done but they do. Good luck.
