Subject: Cut Outs Yea or NAh? IP: Logged
Message: I want my exhaust louder and I read you can buy a cut out and put it in front of the converter for the best sound. What are some good cut outs? I know nothing about exhaust. Would it be good to get my exhaust redone at that time because I want something a little more beefy. I love flowmaster but If there is a better tone I'd love to know what it is and where I can get it. I just need some friendly advice. Thanks

Message: Cutouts are fun but they're illegal for street use and are too loud imho for daily driving all of the time. You can get one from www.summitracing.com for about $35 then have it welded in, plus you have to crawl under the truck each time to open or close it.
I have a McCord Power Plate that bolts onto the exhaust cutout and lets you open/close it from inside of the cab - it's a fun toy to play with, but you'd probably be better off buying the muffler you like rather than using a cutout for the meaty tone.

Message: 1st of all, what engine are you running in the dakota? Is it a 5.9lt, 5.2lt, or 4.7lt. If it's a 3.9lt V-6 I wouldn't even try it. The sound will not be that pleasant. I have a 01 with a 4.7lt in it. It has 3 cats on it and my cut out is installed before the 3rd cat. It is true, I do have to get out and open it up from under neath every time, but I just run with it off most of the time. It's not as loud as the trucks with only one cat because the two pre-cats deaden it a little, but it still sounds really mean. And also if your running a 4.7lt you will loose a lot of low end torque, unless your using forced induction of some type. Any who, sounds great just less power in the low end.

Message: I have a 5.2 Liter. I just have the single exit flowmaster exhaust. I want to turn around and buy like a 40 or 50 series but that will be a couple hundred dollars that I don't have right now. I think I will look into buying a cut out. Are there any types of brands that are actually better than other?

Message: No not really all they are is a peice of pipe that has about a inche or 2 pipe coming off of it that has like a cover on it with some wing nuts so you can open and close it whenever! I dont think there is a big difference in brands.
With exception of the cab opening cutout!

Message: You can get a Flowmaster 40 series for about $80-90...least around here you can.
But like Sincity said if u don't mind getting a little dirty and crawling under to uncap it everytime you wanna use it then thats the best bet for your money.

Message: I have seen the same types of cutouts in a JC Whitney catalog with cable operation so they can be open or clsed from inside the cab.
