Subject: Jet Chip for my 90 Dakota IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1990 Dakota 4x4 with a pre-mag 3.9L and I was looking at Jet Chip Performance Modules. There is a Stage 1 and Stage 2. What is the difference and what can they do for my truck. It doesn't really have any miles on it for being a 1990. 105,500 or something like that. Its a gas hog and the 125 stock hp isn't cutting it. Thanks....

Message: jet chip stage 2 will wake up a magnum 3.9 motor, and it says to run premium fuel or it will ping but my old 3.9 didnt ping much with it in...stage 2 is made for engines with minor mods done (like air intake and exhaust)

Message: i have a question on that...will the 89 or 90 chips work in an 88 computer, i know the connections are the same, but what programming is different? I would probably need the stage 2, since i have a high-lift (for that engine) cam, and my intake is modified, plus headers and full dual exhaust, but i just need to know if it will work

Message: My Jet power module on my 94 5.2l was a COMPLETE waste of money. My truck lost horsepower and I have never ever ordered anything from Jet for any other vehicle I have ever owned. Other people have had bad experiences too. I also ordered a venom performance module and it wouldn't work at all in-line with the stock computer. As soon as I plugged the Venom in the truck acted crazy as hell. I finally got smart and ordered a Mopar performance pcm. Definitely a smart move. A nice increase in power and worth the money. My 2 cents.

Message: I've been running a JET Stage II chip in my 89 4x4 for three years now. Have had no problems whatsoever. I could feel the difference the first time I stepped on the throttle. I must use 91 octane, too.
The difference is a Stage I chip is for non modified trucks. But since I was running a Jacobs ignition, K&N filter, headers, and 180-degree thermostat, I needed the Stage II. Stage I will not function with all of those "bolt-on" mods, only a Stage II will work for that. Then again, you cannot run a Stage II chip bone stock. You must have those mods I just listed or it wont work to full capacity.
Stage I - bone stock increase in hp's.
Stage II - air filter, ignition system, headers, and 180-degree thermostat required. I have had no problem doing 90+ mph in my little pre-Magnum engine and pushing 31" tires with a 2" lift.
Its an expensive toy, however. I got mine from Summit Racing for about $225.

Message: Holy sh!t.
I need to get a stage 2. But I first need to get the headers (or a high performance cat-back should work fine right?), and a 180 thermostat. I have a 14" edelbrock filter..that should be almost the same at the K&N right (even though I hear reallly good things about K&N)?

Message: I recommend getting headers rather than just upgrading the end of the exhaust pipe. YOu can get them for cheap and install them yourself. I hate to see someone spend some money for the chip, only to neglect all the extra things it needs to function optimally, and end up disappointed and sending it back.
YOu could get by without the ignition, but the other mods (headers, 180-degree t-stat, performance air filter) you will definitely need.

Message: Ive been debating a long time about the Jet sTII chip. Some say it works, others say it dont. Tiger, how did you get yours for $225.?They are like almost $300 now right?
I can run 85-90 on the highway but its about it. Not alot left in my V6 when Im at that speed. Plus when I lower my rear end to a 4.10 gear later this summer, that wont help top end either. But Ill buggy in town! Later guys.

Message: Hey guys how big are your tires? Is your truck lifted?
Remember, I've got 31" BFG all-terrains on there, and the truck is torsion bar lifted 1.5" in the front with a 1" spacer in the rear. All of that creates a lot of "drag" while driving. If you guys have stock tires and no lifts, and I'm lifted with 31" tires and we're doing the same mph on the freeways, ... then that should say something about our mods.
If you doubt the JET chip, buy it from a place where you can try it out and return it if you dont like it. I remember the days after I first put in the chip. It just ran strong, and I passed people with a power band (steal a motorcycle term) that I never had before. I guess that is the reasoning for having power tuning in the computer, which is what the chip is for.
