Subject: What 3rd Cat? IP: Logged
Message: I hear many on here list in their long list of mods that they removed their "3rd cat"
I got a 2003 Dakota with the 4.7 and there is just ONE normal Cat up front.
Are people talking about the R/T or something? I haven't SEEN this but maybe they have a resonator or something people are removing that they assumed was a Cat?
I removed the Resonators from our Chrysler. I knew they weren't Cats. I was just hoping to see some improvement but it made the car sound like crap is what it did. Now I know why they were on that thing.
But why would people think there were 3 cats? Only 1 is needed!

Message: Some 4.7's have 1, some have 3. Depends on where you bought the truck and which emissions package you have.

Message: I did not notice much for gains when I replaced my muffler. Could it be the three cats?

Message: Changing the muffler will net you almost no gains whatsoever, as the factory mufflers are actually quite good. Yes you can get a nicer sounding muffler but thats all you are really gaining.
The exhaust restrictions are mostly at the front end, Headers & high flow cats are where the gains will be realized.
