Subject: More power IP: Logged
Message: Hey, I need help with what to do next. I want to add more power but don't know what I should do next. I have a 99RT with the following mods: Vortech SC 6.5psi, headers, catback, 52mm TB, MSD 8.5mm wires, autolites, crane hi-6 ignition, mopar cam, custom computer flash. I think heads or intake manifold would be next but I live in So. CA and need to pass smog. I was thinking of having port work done on the stock heads. Also I want to go with a smaller pulley on the supercharger but I don't want to blow the head gaskets (I have ARP head studs and Fel Pro gaskets though.) Last dyno was 281RWHP/350RWTQ. What do you all suggest. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Message: That's quite a setup!! Why don't you look for some drivetrain improvments. Tighten things up, even tune your suspension. Very nice truck it sounds like tho, keep up the great work.

Message: Thanks. I need to improve the tranny, thats for sure, maybe a new converter. As far as suspension, it is lowered w/new control arms, springs shocks, and energy suspension poly bushings.

Message: Porting sounds like a good idea. With the sc boost pushing more air in, heads that flow more air will add to the power. Ported heads flow quite a bit more than similar size (or even slightly larger) heads.

Message: Engine swap Next, or a trans swap. There is a 4.7L that frequents this site that is doing more power (by 24 RWHP on .5#'s less boost) and more torque, and he has less mods done to it. Check him out sometimes, it's NotchLX outa Georga. I would suggest not going any more boost on the 5.9L due to the shortage of head bolts on these engines (you knbow 5 bolts per cylinder is much better than 4). Later, and have fun.

Message: I see you have a cat back, does that mean you also have a high flow cat? Helps keep boost up, how about trying to run a IC to cool the charged air. That would give you more HP. What about Injectors, have you check you A/F ratio? More power can be had from there too. IC+ A/F ratio would help keep that engine together too :)

Message: Yeah I don't think that I would be up for swapping to a 4.7, I have done too much to mine, and I like the torque of the 5.9. Thats cool to hear NotchLX is making power but does he live in a state where you have to pass emissions? Thats been the toughest part for me. The only reason I might consider a swap would be for the Hemi. I havn't done the hi flow cat yet (was told it might not smog but I think thats BS) I need to get the trans go in (bought one from Bernd and never got it). I thought of an intercooler but for the cost it seems like I would get more power out of a port job. The IC for the Vortech is a water to air and is about $1200. For that price I could have the heads done and get a smaller SC pulley. I am using the stock injectors but obviously have the supplemental ones that come with the Vortech. The shop that programmed my computer said that it was getting enough fuel and that I didn't need bigger injectors.
This is what I came up with: pull the heads and have them ported and also O-ring the heads and block so I don't blow a gasket and then get a smaller pulley. For the price it seems like this would add the most power and should still smog (I heard that the R/T heads would pass the sniffer but not the visual.) It sucks trying to mod your truck when you live in CA.
Thanks for all your input

Message: If your going to port your heads, check and see if you can run thicker gaskets, this might lower your CR: ratio so you could run more boost Try looking at other types of IC's? If Vortechs cost too much find another that cost less. If high flow cat's wouldn't pass, would a bypass be legal? The electric one :) For off road use only.
Yes it would be loud but free flowing or have it re-route to pass the cat when open. You could also clean up your current intake some. Since the M1 wouldn't pass the visual.

Message: The R/T heads will pass visual. They look just like the stock heads from the outside. Nobody would be able to tell from the outside, especially with all the other stuff you have going on under your hood. You NEED an M1, smog or not. not that hard to swap come smog time if you can't find a shop to pass the visual with it on. Otherwise, at least modify your current beer barrel intake manifold by shortening the runners by a cuple inches each.

Message: Would the M1 be better than just modifying the beer barrel? Also, I heard the M1 loses low end power, is it very noticable? With my current mods how much would the M1 add?
Thanks

Message: You will not notice any low end loss with the SC. I gained 20peak RWHP when I put the M1 on my n/a truck with pretty much same mods as you(minus the SC). But the real gains came after 4500RPM. At 5000RPM, the M1 was making 50 more hp than the stock beer barrell. It is definitly better than modifying the stock beer barrel.

Message: That sounds pretty cool. I may just have to change the manifold every 2 years. Is the best price on the M1 at KRC? I want to turn up the boost too, thats why I was thinking of just doing the heads, if I have to pull them to O-ring then I may as well have some port work done.

thats not what he said... he said:
"due to the shortage of head bolts on these engines (you knbow 5 bolts per cylinder is much better than 4)"
...meaning that the 5.9 has only 4 bolts holding the compression in on each cylinder while the 4.7 has 5 (better clamping power).
