Message: YEAH the dakota is a fat cow. JUST GET AN SDIME. just go to www.mys10.com or www.s10forum.com or www.s-seriesforum.com and see for yourself. Just goes to show who has the most loyal owners. The more satisfied an owner is the better he/she makes it for other owners of the same model.

Message: PETE you dont know anything but your fast and furious education. I guess you think Pro Street class racing is ricer'd out because of their stripped interiors?
91DAKOTAFREAK...those are some good ideas and I'd stick with what you had for weight loss. The tailgate and spare are good ones, but visors? 2lbs isn't that much, keep some kinda of comfort unless this is just a drag truck. If it's a daily driver I'd keep the spare and tailgate until I got to the track.

Message: pro street is just that, pro street. ricer is stripping the interior of your daily driver, JUST on race day soley to gain another .01 . ya know that saying 'run what ya brung'... i do exactly that. i remove absolutely nothing. i run in street trim, for one reason only. pull up to me on the street, and ill run exactly what i run at the track. im not gonna have a 14 flat truck, only when its stripped. got anymore fast and furious insults?... i rather enjoy them

Message: Since you have the 2nd gen. body how about a fiberglass hood? My AAR hood is ligher than the stock one by a few pounds. How about a smaller group size battery? If you realy are daring, use a lawn and garden battery, should be a race mod only. If you have a bench seat, swap out with a driver's bucket seat if you don't hall passengers. how about some aftermarket lightweight wheels, they reduce unsprung weight. If your truck has a sway bar, that can be removed, 6 cylinder trucks didn't come with them as standard equipment. Any number of plastic or rubber splash shields may help a little. If your truck uses glass headlamps, you could convert to the aerodynamic style plastic ones with replaceable bulbs. And there is always the toughest one for me, diet to reduce my weight.

if you gotta strip your truck to gain another tenth or two... its not worth it. spend the time it takes to strip it at work and make some money to buy some mods.

Message: Also as far as trucks are conserned weight transfer is worth more then just weight loss if you displaced 100lb off the front to as rear as you can get it it can be worth .2 this method is good untill 45%/55% weight ratio. Ideal ratio is 47%/53%

Message: HOW DARE YOU ALL! You disgrace the name of the likes of Vic Edelbrock and countless other drag racing pioneers - the great men who started it all...without whom we would not even have the great sport of drag racing. The art of "adding lightness" to a vehicle to make it faster has been around since long before japan was even making cars. This IS NOT A "RICER" TECHNIQUE! While I agree that removing creature comforts such as sunvisors and AC in the quest for that extra .02 sec is not always the best idea, this technique does NOT belong to the "rice" crowd...it has simply been borrowed from those who have come before. Argue with each other if you must, but do not bring dishonor to the great ones. :-P
ALSO. In answer to the original post...here are a few things that would help to "add lightness" you can pick and choose which ones are right for you, and what creature comforts you can do without. I myself am not a fan of removing things "just" for race day...the way I see it the track is just a proving ground - so you will have a pretty good idea whether or not you will be able to beat that viper or porche or whatever else happens to pull up next to you at a light...(provided the po-po ain't watching)
If you want a full interior "look" but can deal with some extra noise, try removing the seats and carpet and other trim panels...underneath, there is usually a fair amount of sound insulation...tar paper, etc. take it out. use a heat gun or a chisel, or whatever does the trick. If you're not a big music fan, ditch the radio and the speakers. speakers are heavy! (even the crappy ones!) One trick you can pull at the track (not good on the street at all)is to pull the front sway bar...the weight gain wont be incredible, but the weight transfer is drastically increased...removal allows the body to shift back more on to the rear of the suspension...effectively producing more traction. Almost always worth at least .2 in the quarter (sometimes more if your traction challenged). I would be reluctant to pull the rear tail gate or the spare...even though that's a lot of weight that you don't really need...it's coming off the in the wrong spots. (kinda like a girl going on a diet and loosing all of the weight...well, you know where ;-) ) your back end on your truck is already too light (especially if you're spinning the tires). A fiberglass hood is a good idea, if you can afford it. Not real familiar with the earlier dakotas but, if there's any kind of front valance panel (i.e. under the headlights), that can probably be removed too. if you live in a warm climate, you can always remove the heater core, or AC if you live in Fairbanks or some other godforsaken place. I don't know how much comfort you're after in the seats - I guess it depends on how much driving you do, but you can get fiberglass racing-type seats from Summit racing for about $100 for a pair (get the gen II's). Stock seats are another VERY heavy item. I wouldn't reccomend taking off the air intake setup though...it's not worth the extra speed for the possible consequences if some little creature decides it's a good day to die and heads straigt for the throttle body. All in all, I'd say your best bet is to save up the cash and do a few small mods on the engine. There's lots that can be done cheeply and effectively, from disconnecting smog equip, to fabbing up a "homebrew" intake out of plastic pipe from Home Depot, to getting a new low temp thermostat, etc. etc. I don't know how many of these things you've already done...but if you have specific questions, just ask...I think you just caught some of these boys on the wrong time of the month.

Message: P.S. Jeremy...tsk tsk. No offense meant to the rest of you on this board...BUT...Guess what jeremy? You don't have a "REAL" vehicle to race either!!!! You have a late model dodge dakota. And while it may be quick (who knows how fast) and it may be very nice for hauling $h!t (hell I just went and got a big load of lumber with mine today)...but don't be talkin' "smack" about other peoples trucks. In any serious drag racin' board, most old timers would laugh their @sses off at somebody like you who said their "dragster" was a late model dakota. If you wanted a race car, you shoulda bought one. But you didn't. You wanted something with a little sport, somethin they could hot rod up a bit, and a little bit of cargo space so you could haul some $h!t and maybe some of your friends too...just like everybody else on this board. So what I propose to you is ...go race your truck against whoever you like...have fun and enjoy yourself. And let the dude with the '91 enjoy himself. Just stop causin' $h!t, okay?

Message: p.s. I'm not trying to start crap. I'm very happy with my dakota, although if i had more money i'd have liked to get a fullsize truck. I was almost forced into buying a ranger, but i got a smokin deal on the dak. i've been spending at least one weekend a month at my local track for as long as i can remember. Until recently when it was shut down. There is suppose to be a new one coming soon, but they havn't even broken ground yet. Your right about the god fathers of drag being the first ones to strip there cars to make it faster, but they didn't put it all back together when it was done and drive the kids to school with it. I don't see any problem if you decide your going to turn a 91 dak into a race truck. I'll bet you could make that thing scream with a lot of time and money. I just have a problem with people that take their daily driver to the track every weekend and try to shave a tenth here and there.

Message: you worry about your trucks weight when you are the one who should shed that extra 100 pounds of inventory. what was it? 10hp to every 100 pnds shed? here is a list of things you can do.....jog around block and do a little exercize (got to be good for a gain of 3 more hp), stop sitting on your arss all day (good for 2.5 poneys), stop stuffing your face full of grease burgers and chocolate (good for 2). Eat some ricecakes and drink some slimfast and you should be up to about 10 extra hp. Good Luck and post your times after your mods....he he he
