Subject: what do i need IP: Logged
Message: ive posted a few times about how my r/t is a dog off the line and it will barely spin the tires. my question is what do i need to buy that will make this thing jump off the line like a rocket with some sticky fat slicks. but with street tires i want it to be able to smoke the tires till i let off the pedal. i dont care if the truck stays just the same in speed as it is now . i just want it to be very strong down low. i was told by a friend to get a lower gear in it . would that do the trick? i still want it to be drivable on the highway without running crazy rpm at 70. i know it is weird to just want your truck to be a tire spinning machine and nothing more but hey, im paying for it .

Message: i have k&n fipk flowmaster 40 series superchip programmer and autolite 3923. very funny 00287RC about the skinny tires. 4.56 gears may be an option but how would it be on the highway , blower is not an option , its way to much money ,and ive never liked the whole nitrous thing. i guess im just upset that a midsize pickup truck with 345 ft lbs of torque can hardley spin the tires and is slow. it felt like a rocket when i test drove it because my vehicle before it was a nissan xterra 4x4 which is super slow. but now that ive had it for a while and have driven and raced full sized chevys that can keep up with me and sometimes beat me, im upset with its performance. i just expected more from a 360 cubic inch motor in a midsize pickup 250 horsepower 345 ft lbs of torque and 3 r/t badges pasted to it.

Message: if its a manual im sure you could smoke the tires better from a stop if its a auto i could make a picture like that from holding the brake and getting the tires spinning, hell mine will spin like crazy if i do that.

Message: u are wrong once again, spinning the tires in a auto is much easier then a manual. heres why, in a auto, u press the brake, and u slam on the gas and before u know it ur in 4th gear and ur smoking them in place. in a manual (mine is a 98 5.2 V8) u have to row thru all the gears to keep the revs down, thats almost impossible to do unless u lay some liquid down (water or bleach) and u drop the clutch everytime like u want to bust it. oh yea, if u have lots of hp then u could do a easy burnout in a manual. i know this b/c when im next to my friends slow v6 2001 auto rustang, he can smoke his tires in place, and il smoke mine too but il move up 20-40ft

Message: what i meant ben rollins was it is easier to smoke them from a stop without the brake . if you read on in my post i also mention the brake thing.
that brake holding thing is stupid i see people just sitting there smoking the tires and never moving, then they let off the brake and they spin 60 70 80 feet no wonder your back tires were moving 70 80 90 miles per hour when you let off the brake. i like seeing a vehicle smoke 70 80 feet just by mashing the gas down. ive been in a 5 speed chevy bone stock ex work truck with 100k+ miles on it and a 305 v8 that would smoke the tires all the way out of 2nd gear. i know my r/t wont do it just by mashing the gas so to me that means the manual is easier to smoke tires in. the brake thing is dumb ive seen ford escorts do the same thing and spin like crazy.

Message: You need the 4.56 gears, shift kit and an aftermarket Torque converter.
4.56s will help you spin the tires easier in every gear. With the 4spd/OD trans in your truck the rpms @ 70mph is about 2600rpms. You can test if this rpm is too high for you by driving your current setup with OD off at 55mph(same rpm). I don't think it is too much for the added fun. How much highway driving do you do anyway?
The trans shift kit will help extend the life of your trans and keep the wheels spinning during shifts. The difference is like driving that 5spd work truck normally and powershifting, the faster the better. The shock of the faster shift keeps the tire spinning before it gets traction. The only question is how hard of a shifting trans can you stand to drive daily?
A high performance TQ converter will get the tires spinning without needing to powerbrake and help keep them spinning by it's higher TQ multiplication factor. I haven't heard of any real down side except for the need for a trans cooler if you don't have one already.
It's all about compromise (firm shifts and slightly higher rpms vs. big bucks for more power)

Message: thank you power hungry that was very helpful, finally a straight answer from someone. i really appreciate it. is there any manufacturers of the parts you described that you recommend? i dont do much highway driving so it wouldnt be to bad , and also im used to driving high rpms on the highway my last vehicle the nissan xterra came with a really low gear in it stock and it tached really high on the highway, plus when i go on long trips i use my wifes car now. ive called a transmission shop that said they would put a trans go shift kit in my truck for 300 bucks thats parts and all. is that a good price? how hard are the others to intall by myself? im gonna call my mechanic tommorow and see what he would charge. thanks again for the helpful reply.

Message: I wouldn't try to install any of them yourself. To install the torque converter you basicly need to unbolt the trans from the truck. The gears need to beinstalled with a certain amount of play so that they mess properly. I don't think $300 is a bad price to pay considering the kiit cost about $100 then he needs to install a new filter and fluid. I would have the shift kit and the TQ converter done at the same time if possible and save some money since he's working on the trans anyway.
As for the parts:
Trans-go makes the most popular shift kit and Turbo action also makes a nice kit.
The main TQ converter to still tow stuff is the Mopar 2400 unit.
The street/strip units are, Precision Industries Viper unit (the most popular), Pro torque makes one, TCI makes one and Hughes Performance makes about 5 for a wide range of applications. Others can be found at www.powerdemon.com, 2 at www.artcarr.com and www.apsprecision.com makes 3 to cover a wide range. The prices range from around $200 bucks for the 2400 stall mopar to over a grand for custom units but most are between $500-700. I would also get a trans cooler if you don't already have one to extend the life of your trans.

Message: JUST GET AN SDIME, you'd be more satisfied. They squeel the tires with a 2.2L. Just imagine what you can do with a 4.3L. You can do so much more with an s10 then you can a dodge dakota. That is a fact. You can do a lot of mods to an s10 and get significant gains in hp, but to get significant gains in hp in a dakota, you have to do internal engine mods. Try and prove me wrong on that one peoples
