Subject: valvetrain noise and exhaust questions IP: Logged
Message: whats up guys. dan "the fastman" arcand left my house 2 days ago, we got done doing his top end package on my 99 r/t. now i have 2 main questions.
1-i need exhaust. i had the headers welded up to my factory exhaust, and it cannot f'ing breathe, you can hear it...sounds like an old police cruiser or something. i want either a 3" single exhaust system, or 2.5-3.0" dual system. i want it to sound ballsy but not too loud..i have a flowmaster 40 on there right now. any recommendations/prices??
2-ive got a buttload of valvetrain noise. i didnt run my truck for about a month due to the noise, didnt want to risk damaging anything, and it is still there after the top end rebuild. everyone i know seems to believe its in the valve train, which i agree with...it doesnt sound like bearings or a rod knock at all. ive got crane 1.6 gold rollers, new lifters, smith bros pushrods, and the like. it starts ticking under acceleration, its pretty much non-existant at idle, and half the time you hear it when you let up on the gas... any suggestions/fixes??
thanks guys.

Message: First deal with the valve train. Pull a valve cover and check the valve adjustment. If all is well pull the other side. Look for the studs backing out or just out of adjustment valves. If you find a stud problem; pull it out, use Loc-Tite
on it and let it set overnight. Be sure a flat washer or push rod guide plate is under the stud. If the lifters a going bad, they may not hold adjustment. Put in a new set of quaility lifters. And if you replace the lifters, do a plenum gasket too. You got it apart, might as well. Good luck.

Message: as far as the exhaust system, I would find a small exhaust shop that will bend custom pipe. You will probaly have to get some flex pipe and bend it yourself and thentake it to a shop and they will bend 3" pipe for you. As far as the muffler I would leave it off, if it's to loud for you I would stick with a 40 series 2 chamber flowmaster muffler

Message: thanks for the good responses guys, keep em coming i need suggestions!!!
i pulled a valve cover, the rockers have got some play in them, maybe too much...dan set them, and hes set a ton so im sure they are right, but there is too much noise going on in there...its defintely coming from the valvetrain though.. and i forgot to mention we put in brand new lifters :) any other suggestions please shoot em my way!!!!
about the exhaust, ive got a 40 series fm on there already, but i think the muffler shop i went to missed a weld, or f'ed up on a weld or something...gonna take it back to them and see what they say...
