Message: I have a 99 Dakota 5.2 Auto. My transmission has been giving me problems the past few days. When I drive slow down my street it seems to have a problem shifting to second.... it just bumps in and out of gear till I speed up more then it drives fine. Also when I come to stop I heard a "clunk" come from the Trans. On my was to work today I could a high pitch whine coming from the transmission while driving and it stopped when I put it in neutral. What could be causing my problem?

Message: The clunk is probably the o/d coming out. If you are driving around town, lock the o/d out to save your tranny.
You may have to adjust your throttle cable that goes to your tranny to allow it to shift sooner at lower speeds.

Message: The whining sound that you are hearing in gear is probably coming from a clogged filter.
Transmission filters typically do not get clogged unless there is a failure that is creating excessive contamination.
What color is the fluid? If it is dark(not red, closer to black), and/or smells burnt, it's probably time for an overhaul. Have a trans shop check it out.
