Subject: Hurst Short Throw Shifter IP: Logged
Message: Yesterday my stock shifter started making a really annoying "rattling" sound. Today, it got even worse. So I tore it apart to take a look. I believe the tower was just loose, but since I had it apart I thought it would be a good time to just run down to summit racing and pick up the hurst short throw shifter I have been wanting. I did. I got home got it installed in no time. I love it. I have a 99 RC Dakota with a 5.2 5 speed. When I shift in to first and third it hits the bottom of the dash just a little bit. Has anyone else had this problem? I was thinking about just drilling another hole above the two factory holes, and just cutting the bottom hole off. Has anyone done this?

Message: You need to eliminate the rubber insulators, just go metal to metal. Then snug it up, then pull the handle back as you torque it down. If you do not remove the rubber insulators, it will keep coming loose on you all the time. I have had one for about two years now. I love it! But mine kept hitting the dash until I removed the rubber. There should be no need to drill any extra holes.

Message: I've also had a Hurst for two years. I had exactly the same problem with the stick hitting the dash when I first installed it. I got rid of the insulator and that cured the problem. You would think, by now, that Hurst would have put out a TSB about it since everyone, that installs one in a Dakota, seems to have the same problem. The last time I checked, there's nothing on their web site about it. The Hurst shifter is really a major improvement over the stock shifter once you get it working right.

Message: Ok.. I will tear it apart tomorrow and take a look. I am defiently happy with the shifter, I am disappointed that it took me this long to break down and buy it. I read a few guys complaining about it being a bit lounder, but my exhaust is so loud that I wouldn't notice anything the shifter is doing.

Message: Jammer, you say "once you get it working right". Is it hard to get the Hurst unit working right?

Message: b1llyw,
I haven't removed the insullators yet. But all and all it was pretty easy install. I have never had the shifter off before, and I bet it took half an hour max to do the change out. I also read that some guys put some nuts and locktight on there, so I may do that as well.

Message: b1llyw, it's a very easy installation. Simply follow the instructions, except for the part about using the neoprene insulator where the shift lever bolts on. Torque everything with a torque wrench and set the stops as per instructions. That's all there is to it. By not using the insulator it will, most likely, be "working right" immediately and you won't have to take it apart, later, to fix it .

Message: I am new to the site and am very Impressed!!! I can't belive I waited so long to search for Dakota enthusiasts like myself! I have a 95 Dakota 2wd xcab 3.9 v6. I would like to know which trans I have and if Hurst has a shifter for me, I really want to upgrade. I saw an article in Mopar muscle or Mopar action about a year ago on this swap but it was for a v8. Please help, I would also like to know where to find a v8 TB for resonable price.
