Subject: seriously, is it worth it? fastman tb

I have an '02 4.7 QC with the stock 68mm. I was seriously considering going w/ a 72mm tb from premier automotive, and then having kenne bell flash my pc to put it all together (exhaust, z-tube, HO cams and intake). Then out of nowhere, I start reading about how the Fastman 68mm gives comparable gains. I realize that the Fastman simply bored out the 3mm butterfly. So here is the million dollar question. Is the 72mm with a flash worth the added expense over a simple 68mm tb with the butterfly bored out with the setup I mentioned? seriously

Why would you put the 72mm in anyways? Are you planning ported heads and a big supercharger? That big and it will kill your torque off the line, or towing if you do that. The 68mm is all you need if you are only going to add cams and little things like that. Plus you do know that the stock 68mm is really a 65mm with the restrictions that it has in it. If you are going with MAJOR mods, get the fastman 72mm, and the flash, but I would save for better mods instead of the flash. What kind and size exhust are you going with? It is had to get any gains out of the 4.7 exhust with out getting rid of all the cat's and going with some good headers (not JBA) You are more likly to loose power down low again. Thought that might help you decide,

Andrew

Andrew, don't tell him things that aren't true :) You can change up the exhaust on a 4.7L and it will be just fine. You won't lose any low end power IF you do the correct mods in concert with each other. It's just like any other engine...too much exhaust without the mods to back it up and you'll have some funny flow problems. If you have a 4.7L with the HO Package, a warm air intake (or ram air) with a high flowing filter, then you can open up the exhaust and take advantage of the ability of the parts you've added to the engine. I don't even have a flash yet and I can get into the mid 14's with my setup (still street tires). All I need is the flash and MT ET Streets and I'll be all over the 13.8's and up mark.

Vince, I think you're on the right path, but 72mm is way too big unless you plan on running some serious boost in your truck. Don't go any larger than 70mm. Fastman works just fine for me.

Thanks a lot guys. I was starting to think that a 72mm was overkill, but it seemed like a lot of people were going that direction. I have an MBRP dual 2 1/2" exit with a Intense Performance Z-tube. I am happy with the results with those two mods, and I can't wait for the HO parts. Maybe I'll just replace my tb with a Fastman 69 or 70mm. A 70 would be a 5mm increase over my current tb due to the restriction in the middle. I am still pretty set on the pcm flash, mostly because of how it adjusts the fuel regulation when the tranny shifts. Thanks for the input.

Has anyone tried to CNC out a stock 68? I was thinking of doing this. If you take the step out of it before the butterfly - what happens? What is it for anyway?
