Message: I have an intake temperature gauge I am installing and took some time tonight to see where to mount it (this is on a '03 Quad cab).
The drivers side PVC valve goes into the intake manifold and needs to be rerouted to the vacuum side of the supercharger. This leaves a pressed in steel fitting on the intake (see below picture). I measured the diameter with a pair of calipers and it measured .382". This is about perfect for the fitting on the thermocouple. If I can remove the pressed in steel fitting I can tap the hole and put the thermocouple in there. The location looks to be ideal to pick up real intake air temperature before it goes into the head. I disconnected the hose and put a wire through it and it does go directly into the intake which is visible through the throttle body. The pic shows the fitting in question for the PVC valve and the thermocouple.
Question is, has anyone removed one of these steel fittings from the aluminum intake manifold? It appears to be pressed in. If I can remove the fitting without taking off the intake manifold that would be ideal.

Message: Why don't you just use the 1/4" NPT hole where the IAT is you will most likly have to relocate it

Message: Thanks for the reply! I thought of this, but was not sure if mounting the IAT in the air intake would be better. I also have a water/alcohol injection system in the airhat and want to allow that to have the max effect before reading the temp. If the IAT reads a cooler temp will it run richer?
Thanks,
Scott

Message: I don't think it would be a good idea to run the IAT under boost, looks like that would give false readings to the PCM. Did your SC kit recommend to relocate the IAT ?
"If the IAT reads a cooler temp will it run richer?" .....That would be true

Message: That link you posted is so true and worth reading by anyone who is seeking to add "bolt ons" to their new ride.
I laugh when I see people list their mods all the way down to the ..."performance spark plugs and wires"!
Why even mention you added those? They didn't add any horsepower what so ever!
Anyone new to building or modifying engines should read that link. I couldn't explain the "real world" of bolt ons any better!

Message: After giving some thought whether to move the IAT sensor I decided to keep it where it is. Mainly because it is does give a more accurante temperature reading of the air before entering the heads. Since I will be running a supercharger with water/alcohol injection the A/F ratio and timing advance are more critical. Plus any ROM modifications would probably assume the stock loaction.
With that said I made up a puller to safely remove the steel fitting in the intake manifold that the drivers side PVC valve hooks to. The hole is the perfect size to tap and thread for the thermocouple on the intake temperature gauge. Not sure if the fitting would have came out by smashing it with a pair of vice grips and pulling it out, but I did not want to find out the hard way and potentially create a headache.
I will post some pictures to my website in the event someone wants to duplicate my setup. I will also loan out the puller I made if anyone is interested in using it.
I also hooked up my boost gauge and figured out a decent way to hook up and route the vacuum line. In short I ran it through the firewall going through the hood release grommet behind the master cylinder. I tapped into the vacuum using a 3-way tee on the master cylinder that routes to the cruise control (before the check valve on the cruise contol line). Very short and direct path to the pillar gauge pod.

Message: Scott,
Tell us about the water/alcohol injector? I have a Kenne Bell setup and continue to get a little detonation in the upper rpm's.
Thanks, Larry

Message: Well, there isn't much to tell right now, it is not installed yet. I picked the supercharger up used and it came with the alcohol/water injection system. You can see details on it at:
http://www.carrollsupercharging.com/index2.html
They have lots of reading on their website! It will be interesting to see how much timing retard will be required (if any) under full boost.

Message: Thanks for prompt reply Scott.
Looks interesting. Plan to give them a call. KB also has a water injector, but I don't think the boost trigger is adjustable.
Let us know how the install goes.

Message: Thanks Shane,
Took a look at the Kennedy site. Looks good except for the price. Long way from Alabama to NY. Maybe they can design system over phone.
Later, Larry
