Subject: Air/Fuel gauge IP: Logged
Message: Can someone that has already installed an A/F gauge give me some hints on where the best spot to hook into the O2 sensor is? Does the wire go into the cab where you can tap into it? I'd rather not start at the O2 sensors and trace the whoe thing through the wiring harness if at all possible.
Thanks,
Scott

Message: you have to tap it somewhere after the o2 sensor pigtail harness as the other wires are sheilded. on my truck I couldn't get to them and gave up.

Message: you can get to the wire on the drivers side. i did mine just before the connector on the o2 sensore side it is not easy to get to and it does not enter the cab. i ran my wire through a hole i made in the boot next to the throttle cable and ran it up the pillar, the guage is kind of a pain to read the way the truck is set-up the guage will go from full red to full green during idle and cruise the only time it will stay in one place for more than a couple seconds is under acceleration it flickers like a christmas tree unless you are sure you need one it get real annoying. i would like to take mine off but im to scared with the turbo that i might get lean but as soon as im sure everything is working without fail it COMES OFF hope this helps.

Message: Thanks for your replies. Where is the computer located? The wire has to go up there somewhere (whether it is accesible is another story). I have a friend that is an electronic engineer looking into a circuit that either smoothes out the gauge response. It will probably average X number of inputs and output an average voltage. That or set the sample time and hold the voltage in between samples. I agree, the way the gauge works now it is a useless light show for the most part.

Message: Very simple.........harness that goes to the pcm. I called Autometer to confirm before I did mine and the tech dept told me..........either this one or that one......only choice of two. He was right. Call them, then run your wire in the same harness.....nice and neat

Message: I hooked mine up into the wiring harness between the tranny to the computer on the right fenderwell. I had to look into my Chiltons manual for the correct wires.
Yes the front sensor guage goes like a windshield wiper in a rainstorm but you can read the average to figure what it's doing. The second one just stays rich at idle and lean at cruise.

Message: Thanks for your replies. I found it is pin #24 on the ECM. Black wire with dark green stripe. If you tap into the wire where the harness meets the firewall there is a rubber plug right underneath that goes into the cab (Quad cab). Very simple install, just make certain to solder the wire connection.

Message: Why are you guys wasting your time? You'd do better to buy an EGT gauge instead of those narrowband sensors that do nothing.
A true wideband setup is best and sells for about $700. Once you've tried the best...you'll see the light.

Message: Turbo Guy, I guess for fine tuning a more precise A/F gauge would be in order, but to see whether you are running lean or rich the stock sensor is adequate (although a wide band o2 sensor would be better). Also, even if you invest $700 into a EGT gauage, your PCM is still controlling your engine off the stock o2 sensor.

Message: Ummmmm........I'm sure you're right but $700 ??? (u.s. $$ I'm sure) converted to canadian $$......don't think so, at least not at the moment for my relatively stock setup (N/A), maybe later when the blower goes in

Message: This is what Im talking about. Has nothing to do with controlling the mixture..just reads EXACTLY how the vehicle is running. It can be used on anything. Even has ODB2 plugs, etc.

Ive seen and used it in person. Its the best..PERIOD. It was matched against a DynoJet sensor as well. Dead on nuts accurate.
