Subject: Gas Octane Change? Help! IP: Logged
Message: I was reading what was on the website that gasman posted (http://theserviceadvisor.com/octane.htm). I read about the rotten egg smell. I have used 93 octane in my 4.7 pretty much since I got it,(has 30,000 now) I changed to 87 octane about 2 weeks ago and now everytime I go WOT and stop back to idle, there is a really bad rotten egg smell. The website said that this would happen while I was on 93 octane, but it was completely opposite, it happened when I changed to 87. Does anyone know why this would be? Could I have messed something up on my truck because of using 93 octane for so long?

Message: Nothing messed up, your cats just decided to go bad at the same time you changed gas.

Message: Well if your cats are bad it's b/c they were working harder than normal trying to burn the excess fuel that was being dumped into them by you using the incorrect octane gas. Higher octane in an engine that was not designed for 91+ will get worse gas milege and make less power. You get worse mileage b/c the burn characteristics for 91+ are different than for 87-89 octane. 91+ octane has a higher flash point than 87-89, and therefore, less of it is burned during the internal combustion process. It's dumped out the exhaust into the cats, thereby causing failures at an earlier rate.

Message: Depends on what modifications you have on your car/truck.
Stock I wouldn't do it unless you've got a high mileage engine.

Message: For a relatively stock 4.7L (hell, even moderately modded ones) 87 octane will be the best for overall performance. The only time you really need to go up in octane with our engine is when changing to a higher compression ratio, adding a forced induction system, or using NO2 (nawwwwssss). If you feel that you are having pinging with 87, drop your plugs one heat range and install a 180 deg thermostat.

Message: It is normal for your exhaust to smell like rotten eggs because that is what sulphur smells like. It means your catalytic is doing its job. Have you noticed that when you drive behind new cars they smell like rotten eggs?
