Subject: Catback & low End Torque IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2000 CC 4x4 4.7 and I'm thinking about a catback system for my truck. I have noticed several people on this site talking about losing low end torgue with new exhaust systems. I was kind of wondering what the truth is? I really don't want to lose much (If any) low end torque. I would really like to gain some low end torque if possible (any not to expensive suggestions??) For an exhaust, I'm thinking of getting something like a magnaflow 3" single exhaust catback (Or Gibson equivilent). Any help or feedback would be GREATLY appriciated.

Message: You won't lose any power with either of those exhausts. Get a carsound 2.5" in/out cat as well. They run around $100. You won't gain much of any low end power from these. Get the HO cams from buymopar.com for low end. Get yourself an intake as well to equal out the in's/out's.

Message: Can you explain the difference between low and high end torque? I'm considering a Catback as well, and I'm new to this. THanks

Message: Low end torque happens in lower rpms and high end torque happens in the high rpms. For towing and off road you want high end. For racing and hauling a$$ you want high end.
For instance if you engine produces good low end torque but ok in the high end...then on a dyno graph you will see most engine torque produced in the lower rpms...we'll say under 2500.

Message: You do lose low end torque with some cat backs, I had a cat back installed yesterday they pulled out all the 2.5 pipe and went with 3 and put in a flowmaster 40 and I could tell right away the low end loss I brought it back a few hours later and had them switch the flowmaster for a magnaflow and now I have the low end back. I think if you get a muffler with the strait through flow you will lose torque get a gibson or magnaflow gibson is little pricy so i think maganoflow is next best thing on a budget.

Message: But magnaflow is staight-thru. I have a magnalfow as well on stock 2.5" pipes and lost no torque. I have a 2.5" free flow cat and lost no torque from that either.

Message: The guy that installed my cat back was saying 10 to 15 hp gain but thats BS I did gain a little with the magnaflow cat back perhaps 2 HP i can feel a little more low end than stock, I lost Hp with flowmaster and they sound like crap All they do is POP when you let off gas really sux.

Message: My magnaflow is not strait through, I am no Exhaust expert all I know is I had to get up higher RPMs to get truck moving with the flowmaster.

Message: Magnaflows are straight through. If your's isn't, then you didn't get a Magnaflow.

Message: I could be wrong but I allways thought inlet and outlet had to line up for a strait through flow, now I have the XL turbo if that is considered a strait through then thats what I have.
